  1. Thank you Tim for the welcome and links. I have tried to stay up with all the research, watched a million videos and did managed to keep my 20L tank with some livestock running since 2014....up until this freeze wiped me out. It is nice to see the acceptance of important bacteria is and not just 'you have to change 10% water/week' gaining ground.

  2. It has been some time since I saw the faces or spoke with some of you guys. Lots of new faces and site has changed a bit! Few years out of keeping a real tank, I started a 200gal build last year (not posted) but Covid/House move and other things caused delay after delay. But things are settling in and I am starting this back in earnest.

I have tried to catch up in the last 2 or so years of posts/videos and new with quite a bit of accepted knowledge has changed. Hope to hear some good news from you guys and start stocking tanks soon.

  3. I ran some current tests a few weeks ago with the use of cat5 (24ga) on a diy pendant. According to various online info there are two different answers to the max amperage, one being chassis wiring and other for power transmission. Being that we run most of our lines in and around the heatsink with some airflow, just as in a boxed chassis, I felt okay with testing a bit higher amperage than just what the max transmission rate was.

So, the test was with 4 channels:

    1x 1A-30V Bridgelux ES 1350

    2x 1A-12V(series) Luxeon M RB

    2x 1A-3.4V(s) HyperV

    2x 1A-3.6V (s) blue

All used cat5/6 24ga. wire from the led to vr boards and cat5/6 from the vr boards from the Extech DC power supply (0-30v,5a).

I maxed the array at 3.44A on the PS->VR line with this setup and stress tested for 45 minutes. Most of the wire from VR to PS was left sleeved while the VR-LED was unsleeved. During the 45 min. test I used a Fluke IR handheld camera to monitor LED temps and wire temps for possible thermal issues arising from over current. While the Tjunc on the Luxeon and Bridgelux's did rise to ~65C, I only saw an increase of PS-VR line temp of around 6C, well below the breakdown point of the plenum.

One note is that was tested in 23C/72F ambient. I have yet to test in a more real world T.amb but the T.rise should be (fairly!) linear and acceptable.

Since I will be running a remote power solution for my array, I am not quite comfortable with this at distance (max. 7ft.) and will alternatively be moving to an 18ga solution for PS->VR and using cat5/6 for the arrays.

The local runs for the arrays however never had an issue.

  4. Just wanted to touch back with an update. Got my pumps in last week....Wednesday-ish? But couldn't try them out until after the holiday break. Things are impressive. ONE pump on a 6ft tank managed a 1 inch wave across the entire surface with no tweaking. Gonna get to play a bit more this week. Haven't even had to connect the second yet.

Has anyone else other than Lenver received theirs?

  5. My indian tuskfish has recently decided to become very aggressive towards his tank mates, so I'm looking at selling him. He's approximately 5-6" great color, fat and happy. He seems to be okay with the larger fish, but has taken to picking on my clowns and filefish. I'll need to catch him, which may take a few days, so I want to find a home for him before I pull him out. Asking $50 or possibly a trade for a small tang.

    Pmed!

  6. what is your water temp? are you monitoring for ph/temp swings? The cold front that blew through took my new frag tank from 79degrees to 64 overnight, and my 'test paly's' closed up and withered away. How big is your pod population? How much flow are you running? Are you dosing Kalk into the sump or directly into the DT?

    • Temp is steady 80-81. pH has been very stable compared to the tank they came from.
    • The pod population is insane!!! I started with a 500count 3 weeks ago from R2G ( plus seed from other tank) and now at any given time I can spot 100+ easy.
    • Flow is lower for this size tank (6ft) of a single Tunze turebell 6100. Looking to source some MP-40's
    • No kalk at the moment (or alk), just keeping the Mg up via Kents M.

What about an increase in salinity? I had some stuff melt away in a matter of about 2 days when i first set up my tank...the new refractometer I bought wasn't working.

    I have stayed solid at 1.025 +/- .001for 7 weeks now.

I had a gorilla crab in my last batch of BRS reefsaver rock

I have had SPS and lps in the tank now for quite some time. My daughter did say she saw a big crab a week or or so ago...I dismissed it as a blue leg......Hope it wasn't anything. I don't dismiss a hitchhiker, its just much of this rock has been with me for 18 months+.

Thanks everyone for input. I don't have any photos of after as there was literally nothing left.

  7. Hi all. Interesting issue here. I had a rock with around 8-10 large green palys that I transferred to the new tank 2 weeks ago. They have been out and non reclusive in the light. There are also not new frags, but grown from a single frag over 2yrs and they disappeared within 3 days.

I have read astrea stars could be blame, but is this likely?!? I have NEVER seen stars go after anything. I have no other pests that I know of other than my voracious blue-legs as I have been careful to start with only rock I have had in the other tanks or cured. SPS, LPS and mushrooms are so far doing very well in the tank.

    Thanks for any input.

    Couple tank params:

    ph: 8.1

    alk: 9.5-9.8

    mg: 1620

    cal: 400-420

photo period is 12 hrs actinic, 4 hrs mh.
