  1. Bought this beast of a skimmer and realized I'd likely be overskimming the heck out of a 125+40 sump with it. I thought about not keeping power to it through a timer for part of the day... so if nobody wants it it's not gonna hurt my feelings.. I'll make it work through sporadic skimming. ha!

Thought I'd toss it up here for grabs, I've had it about a month and I can't send it back to the vendor. Just trying to get what I paid for it. I got it on closeout for $239.

    RL225 Specifications

    Overall Height 27”

    Reaction Chamber Diameter 8”

    Footprint 11”x13.50”

    Included Water Pump PM RLP2000

    Power Consumption 65w

    Ozone Compatible Yes

    Capacity 225g Maximum

    Muffler Included

    Integrated Valve/Vented Drain Yes

    Optimum Water Level 9”

These things retail for $399. :)

  2. Tagging along on this. From what I've read Kalk is fine until you start outpacing your Calcium/Alk depletion and have to start worrying about pH since Kalk can really do a number on it if overdosed.

Another thing to consider if you use Kalk in conjunction with your ATO your Alk/Calc will have "dips" throughout the day where calcium and alkalinity gets used but doesn't get replenished frequently (only when your ATO kicks on). Dosers on the other hand can keep your parameters more stable (assuming you control the dosers with timers or an controller)

But I am by no means an expert on the matter, I've just been reading up on it trying to decide what I want to do once I move to a larger tank. I'm going to start with Kalk (as you said, easier) and if need be move to dosers at a later date.

  3. We now have 10 members signed up for the BRS group buy, so we are in.

If anyone else would like to join in, please send me your last name & the email you used to set up your BRS account.

I will prepare the paperwork & submit it on Monday (8/2). Then what? Here is what will happen after your list is emailed to BRS:

    • On the pre-determined Tuesday (8/3) each participant will receive an email notifying them that the Group Buy has started.
    • Participants can start buying as soon as they get this email. Please wait for this email before placing orders!
    • During the group buy week participants will login to their own account to place their own order, which ships immediately.
    • At the end of the Group Buy each participant's account will be changed to Preferred Customer. BRS Preferred Customer pricing is generally between our retail and group buy prices. This permanent upgrade is our way of saying thanks for getting your reef supplies with us!

Great! I'll probably just piggy back off you if you don't mind. One of the items I wanted I ended up getting cheaper through someone getting out of the hobby on another board. Saved me $15 bucks and it's still new in box. Can't complain there. So I may be looking to spend around $40.. I might look around more.

  4. That is quite a boost! Did you get one of the booster pumps form BRS? I was thinking about getting one eventually cause our water pressure pretty much sucks :( Good to know that a booster pump can make that much difference.

Yeah I got it from BRS as a kit a while back on sale.

Before the booster my spigot PSI was 70, after hitting the sediment filter and GAC filters I had 58PSI (12PSI loss) at the membrane. Now with 70PSI at the spigot going through the booster I'm at 90PSI to the membrane. I can't complain about that other then I'm now on the high side for pressure (90 seems to be a maximum before harming the membrane) so I'm going to dial back my valve at the street a tiny bit. No big deal.

This is also going through my softener since it was a retrofit so even my outside spigots are 'softened'.

  5. I finally got around to putting my RODI booster on. I'm now getting 90PSI to the membrane and let me tell you the output volume change from 58PSI to 90 is amazing.

I may, however dial down the pressure at my valve by the street to not put additional wear on the shower/faucet valves that's commonly seen with higher pressure houses. I dialed it up about 10PSI when I first got my RODI system so I wasn't on the lower end of the efficiency spectrum for the membrane. I imagine if I went down 10 PSI to 80 after the booster (which would be about 60 at a hose bib) I'll still be getting a nice high rejection rate.

    Highly recommended!

  6. The other night I noticed a bunch of MINISCULE white specs on my glass. I didn't think much of them nor did I do anything about it at the time. This evening I got a closer look and realized a bunch of them are moving. Seems like these are copepods?

At any rate, it's a darn shame my fish are all in QT... I guess they'll have a field day when they get back to the DT in uh... 7 weeks unless I see another symptom come up.

    Hi

    Jason,

Welcome aboard! It's nice to see another Round Rock member here. I am planning an AGE or DSA 125-150G in the future and was checking into the Tunze silence pumps. Would you mind telling me your thoughts on the one you have (I guess you haven't been running it long) and which model it is?

Your 4x2x2 (almost) is more or less the dimensions I'm playing with unless I go deeper in overall front to back tank depth.

I've got the larger of the 2 Tunze pumps (the .040 model) and it's dead silent - quitest return pump I've ever used. I think it's a perfect size for a 120g tank so long as you aren't relying on your return pump as your only circulation. At 42w (haven't verified this yet) it's incredibly energy efficient. I also haven't done any measurements or anything to see if it's transferring heat, but overall I'm happy with my temps considering the ambient temps and the fact I'm not even running a single fan.

Amazing. I guess it's the volume of water you have or your ambient temperature. Right now my 34 gallon, which has a Jaebo WP-1500 return pump rated at 35W, a Tunze 9002 Skimmer pump rated at 8W and a heater that hasn't turned on in months (no wattage there I guess).. and 4x24W T5's and without a fan I get above 80. I also have an MP-10, but that's not putting wattage in the tank as the motor is external.

So like you, when I do my bigger tank energy conservation and heat transfer are going to be important items on my list. Thanks for the mini review.

  7. derrick if you want a good honest opinion! go to reef 2 reef! people here on arc seem to think they are too good for us newbies! its simply just a bigger community![quote

I'm not sure what you are implying but this isn't the place to air out your grievances with the board.

  8. Tech M will kill snails and things of that nature. I've debated Tech M for my own GHA issue but I'd rather not re-buy a CUC. I think my sea hare is getting tired as he's missing large patches of growing algae in my tank even though I'm feeding very very sparsely now.

  9. Ok, I've updated the list but it turns out Inland Reef already has a few people on a list he was starting when I inadvertently stepped in to the coordinator role. So from here on out please PM Jason (Inland Reef) for your BRS group buy participation.

  10. Alright.

Well if we want to make this official I'll have to get everyone's last name and email address used at BRS. That way I can submit the proper 'paperwork'. Since submissions are due on Monday, today won't work unless we get more folks involved. So lets set it for August 1st submission date, and August 2nd we'll get our group buy status unlocked whenever they get around to it?

  11. A group order would be ideal as we'd get the group discount.

Another incentive is that each individual that participates on the group buy, automaticlly becomes a "preferred" customer and gets that discount on all future individual orders.

Each order is shipped directly to your address, so you don't need to coordinate pickups.

If we can't get 10 people to go in on ARC, then i can throw this out there on some other forums.

Anyone else need something from BRS???

Yes it would be ideal, but at the same token I'm not ordering enough to qualify for free shipping whilst merging orders would get us there. I am already a 'preferred customer', and the deeper discount for the group buy would work on one item I want. So if we can make it happen so be it. :)
