  1. Very cool to see where everyone works. I've been at Dell for 17 1/2 yrs now. I moved to Nashville in '99 when we opened that office and spent 3 yrs there. I only ended up back here because I got a job offer that included a relo package. When I got back is when I really got back into fish...got a great deal on a 120g from RCA and I've been supporting that habit ever since. Been doing federal sales for the last 6 yrs. I can attest to what Niko had mentioned...when the layoff rumors start going you never know who'll get hit and if your number is gonna be called. I've always been lucky and in the right group. Now that I'm in fed sales there's a lot more job security because we can't outsource any of our positions...it all has to stay here in the US!.

We have a few clients that work in sales at Dell, my Grandfather has been with Dell and has been in the storage department for about 7 years I believe.

  2. That's cool. There was a time I knew a lot of people at le cordon bleu, but I've heard some bad things about it lately and heard they are only offering certificates now and not a degree. I also knew a lot of people that were private chefs and caterers in Los Angeles. They did very very well!

  3. My girlfriend and I own a pet sitting company (soon to be pet services). I worked in every aspect of the pet industry you could imagine. I imported animals out of Africa and Madagascar for a while. Then I went to working retail for a while with ridiculous hours. Due to those hours I got a job working for a veterinary clinic that was great. I then decided to pick up and move from Austin to Los Angeles for a year to see how the stars live. I worked for a Chameleon Rescue there that was basically the main intake for illegally imported chameleons. After realizing that everyone in LA worked 3-4 jobs to make it by until they either became a movie star or worked with a union long enough to sustain a family we decided to move back to Austin and start the Pet Sitting company. I worked an hourly job while my wonderful girlfriend kicked the company in to gear and now we are expanding to become a one stop shop for in home pet care ;)

My advice to anyone struggling to get over the $10 per hour hump is to find a way to turn something you love in to an income! We absolutely love caring for animals and it has become a great way to support us!

If anyone needs any tips or ideas for growing a new business or just wants to chat about it hit me up! I love hearing how people want to support themselves and break away from making everyone but themselves money ;)

  4. Well in my attempt to save up and put together a tank I find myself needing to sell the items I've saved up due to a big move across country. I'll be moving to California and I'll probably start building up again once I get there so I don't have to lug it all across the country with me!

I live in the North Austin (183 / 45) area and would prefer to meet up north for the trade!

  5. I know it seems kind of crazy, but we would do water tests and all normal parameters would come back normal, but fish would still come back the next day dead, this is while others were 100% fine. After asking a few people, it seemed like the people that were coming from the area around round rock / cp / and far north austin were losing the fish while the people coming from different areas (all around austin) were doing fine. It could have just been a coincidence that the people from those area's just werent having good luck, but I think it has something to do with the water due to the fact when the people that were coming back constantly switched to RO they had 0 problems with their fish.

On a side note, if you are getting the fish from petco, I know they will replace the fish as long as you bring it in with your receipt :) not sure about the other stores.

  6. Ok so I'm in the process of figuring out my first tank and one of the big questions I have is about the live rock. I know that it helps out with filtration and everything, but is it that much more important to buy established live rock over buyin dead rock and curing it yourself?

    Thanks,

    Dustin

Also, if I were to cure it myself would I have any limitations on what I could put in my tank before it is cured?

  7. I'm definitely going to try to come to this. I'm new to saltwater and I'd really like to see what people are working with and maybe I can find stuff to help me start out!

When you say the cards are there does that mean for people that have already paid to pick up there or could I pay there? Looks like there are some awesome benefits with it!

  8. I am looking to get into the saltwater hobby and I'm basically looking for as much as I cam get for around $300. I would prefer it be a full set up and if it's still going that would even be better :). Size doesnt matter but I want something larger than 30g and I definitely don't have a problem with it being much larger :). I'm definitely on a budget so if anyone could help me out I'd really appreciate it!

I would prefer it have a sump, but not necessary. If it's something you have in storage I'm pretty good with plumbing so I would have no problem setting it back up, I'd just prefer the pump still work.

I need it to have a stand if possible. May make an exception for some tanks!

I need it to have a light or be considerably less than $300 so I can purchase a light.

Shoot me offers with what you have. You can email me pics at [email protected] or pm me and you can text them to me or whatever works!

  9. I know this is a little late, but are you using tap water and treating it? I worked at Petco as the Aquatics specialist and everyone is right, every now and then there are bad batches of unhealthy fish (especially in the summer with heat and shipping). However, I've dealt with a few people in north Austin area who we couldn't seem to keep fish alive no matter what. The only thing that worked in these cases was going to RO water. The tests we used at Petco were your basic tests for ph/nitrates/phosphates/etc. and I really think there's something going on in north austin water that just makes it really hard for the fish. If you're still having problems and using tap water, I'd suggest trying RO. I can almost guarantee it will work.
