  1. Have another update on the white stripe maroon and goldflake maroon pair...

Spawn #3 (she began laying around 6-6:30pm and finished around 7-7:30pm, takes her about an hour to do the whole process, I always see her ovipositor the evening she lays)

After the spawn the male stayed in the pot unlike the first two nests. Hoping they all get fertilized and make it to hatch but I'm not really expecting that until the 6th or so nest. We shall see.

  2. Sad news. The large male died.

I'm scratching my head on this one. He was eating frozen and I'm loaded on pods in the tank.

From my limited knowledge on pods I can see what look to be isopods and tiger pods in abundance. Amphipods (the big ones) are also in the tank but I don't see a lot of them. I also did daily 5-10% water changes with matching parameters.

Signs of his decline: A couple days ago he stopped eating and would not go to the trough during feeding time. His body also began to look "cloudy" or pale and in a matter of a couple of days his skeleton was showing...looked like he was starving to death.

I cannot imagine that he starved in my care since he was eating frozen and I have only had him for a week or so. Only thing I can think of is some sort of internal parasite l. Worth noting that I also ran a small UV on this system. Was no real threat to the pod population as I have pod propagation HOB filters loaded. I also dose live pods and rotifers daily. The female is doing well and is getting fat. She eats from the trough and feeds on pods all day.

Moving forward I plan to find another 4"+ male as I know females prefer larger males. I also plan to utilize one of the larger stalls in my 110 for the pair, which is equivalent to about 40g of water area. This section does not have powerheads and is the first section from the return pump. Lots of liverock and I can still feed with the trough easily.

The 110 will be a better solution to support their mating dance which a 10g might not support very well. I read they need a little room vertically. This is on the back burner for now, until I find another male.

  3. Hey Mike, the trough was designed for Seahorses, making it easier to spot feed them. The trough provides a place for the food to sit while slow and docile fish/seahorses have a chance to get to it. The hitch gives the seahorse a place to attach their tail to while they feed.

Many customers have reported using the Wet Acrylic Seahorse trough for other fish such as mandarins... but even more have reported using the softy box for the same effort.

The softy rubble box is larger and will provide more protection against currents and might be a better option for community tanks...but the trough is just cool. : )

My mandarins are in a tank to themselves so the trough works fine as I also turn the pumps off. The hitch from the seahorse trough seems to get in their way a bit and sometimes they have difficulty swimming through it... but they eventually get it. I do prefer the size of the trough for feeding my mandarins. The rubble box is kind of big.

The magnets really help in giving some flexibility on how both products are used.

  5. it looks like your doing great. Do you plan to breed other type of mandarins ie targets ect?
Thanks, i'd like to try the others as well. We shall see.

KInd of both. I'm trying to determine if I should wait until I yours are ready or can either come by an ORA mandarin, or just make sure my fuge is properly seeded with pods and just go get one at my LFS. I like the idea of one that will accept frozen food, but if it needs to be fed that pften and will have a hard time competing for the live food, then I'm not sure I gain anything from waiting. I think you've answered my concerns so I'm just going to tag along anyway and watch your progress. You do a great job with coral propagation and clown breeding so I'm really looking forward to see how this turns out.

Thanks Wade, appreciate the comments and follow. I'm feeding my pair frozen once a day and relying on live for the rest... though they aren't competing for food with any other fish. They seem to be getting much fatter than when they fist came in. I'm also doing daily water changes. I have a small UV hooked up to this system but contemplating turning it off as I know i'm killing some of the life. Mainly had it for water clarity and to prevent nuisance algae from taking off.

How much do you think you'll be selling these Mr. Cob?

Good question as I have not yet thought that far out yet. Whatever the price, it will be competitive with other captive bred mandarins on the market.sent from my Samsung Note 8 on tapatalk

  7. I've read that mandarins are very busy fish and need to be fed twice a day.  If they're eating pods off of live rock then they can feed thmselves as they like, but if they have to be fed twice a day that seems like a lot of extra nutrients in the water collumn to accomodate a single fish.  Also, how much of the food will they actually get having to compete for it with other DT inhabitants?  If I'm wrong about the required frequency of their feedings, then I guess my question is moot except for competing for food.

I agree Wade... and most mandarins won't even accept frozen or dry food. Also to add to your comments, tanks should be mature and larger than 40g to support their live food demands.

Not sure if you were just chiming in with info on keeping Mandarins or if you had a question for me in regards to this project?
