Next time you can just siphon out the water back into the tank slowly and it wont disturb the sand like that. Thats what I did when I got my 14g and it takes a bit longer to get the water back in but it doesnt get cloudy.

I have a rubber strap wrench they use to install plumbing fixtures when you dont want to mess up the fixture. It sounds like this would work for you its adjustable too. I live near arboretum if you need it message me I work from home. James.

I bought a reef octopus at Aquatek and it is working real well on my 46g tank that i just got set up. They gave me the sale price too with 20% off for next Saturday so you might want to look into getting that its really cleared up my water in just a few days.
