  1. I was tricked by the 100% silicone on the label. I just used this to install a plexiglass divider in my sump. I need to know if i have to rip it out before it dries. I was reading about the drying time when i read on the back

"Not for use below the water line, where FDA compliance is necessary, or aquariums"doh.gif

please tell me this stuff is OK to use.

  2. Sea Hare.

Hey man, let me tell you what worked for me. I bought a sea hare. he ate it all in about a week . i kept him one additional week to get all the stuff i couldnt see. then i sold him because if they run out of food and die in your tank it makes a mess. here are some before and after pics.

that was three months ago and the algae never came back. biggrin.gif

    He was a total machine.

The only other advice i got was to get the tank parameters such that hair algae couldn't grow. I NEVER DID THAT. but it seemed like good advice. I guess if i added a new coral that had some hair algae on it , i would be susceptible to another outbreak. but is was cheep enough to buy another sea hare to clean it up

BTW: he did knock over a couple of things in the tank but not much more than a large turbo snail would

  3. Will be ready for rehoming in 1 week. $10 cash plus interesting frag. Most interesting frag gets him!

    IMG_5502.jpg

Well, I bought Harry the the Sea Hare for $20 and the store will buy him back for $10.

So, I thought I'd pass the cash savings along to the ARC and at the same time get a nice frag for myself. biggrin.gif

So, I had this ugly Hair algae explosion and i bought a bunch of turbo snails but they didnt really do anything.

Then I bought Harry and in one week.....Gone

    IMG_5496.jpg

Thought i'd keep him one more week for good measure then send him on his way. Rest assured. this Sea Hare will do the job!

please try to make the frag of something i dont already have. I like bright colors or corals that change dramatically in appearance or size or extension

  4. no problem

I thought they were cute but there was no way to save them and still get rid of that hair algae. I've had the tank for a couple of months now and its always had a couple of isolated hair algae clusters that remained the same size. But last week the hair algae just started spreading like crazy. My goal was to get it ALL out this weekend.

    collateral damage.....

Keep in mind that some people find them desirable, I was referring to the idea that if your rock can be removed from the tank to battle the algae, the polyps can be replaced later.

  5. So, I'm combating a hair algae problem in my tank. i have cleaned all of it out that i can. However, on this one rock i have that is now covered with hair algae, i can see these cool little redish pink things. Anyone know what they are?

  6. Just wanted to add to this thread in case anyone references it in the future.

With the chiller filter cleaned and the leak fixed the tank has settled in at and average 1.5gal /day water loss on my 75gal tank . I will be playing with various combinations of fans and chiller settings to optimize this further. Either way , this is much more manageable than the 4gal/day i was facing when i started this thread. thanks!

  7. Hi Teresa,

Every forum category is sorted with the most recently replied to topic displayed first. If you are selling an item , more people will tend to see it if it is listed first. so people will sometimes reply to their own add with the word "bump" to bump their topic up to the top of the list.

When used judiciously , as i have seen it used on this forum, it is a help to forum members to keep all the items that have not yet sold near the top of the list.

  8. Hey Robb,

Just wanted to say thanks. The little buggers are free to float about the tank right now as i havent decided where to place them permanently yet. they are all doing well. It was nice to meet everyone even though it was only for a few min.

    Thank You!

P.S. Cool, i'm not a guppy anymore!. guess 10 posts makes me a reef keeper

  9. Thanks for the replies everyone,

I think i may be on the high side but still within normal range. My chiller doers run alot during the day. but only occasionally at night. sorry i misled you in my original post. I will collect some more data over this next week and post again. This first week has been highly variable as i was learning how to set everthing up. I did identify a leak in the chiller plumbing and have had some trouble correctly setting the skimmer level. (i am new)

how hot do you keep your A/C? 80C

are the fans pointed directly at the water? they are 5 inch fans. located in the back of the canopy on either corner of the tank pointed back to front throug a gap in the canopy that runs the whole length across the back. directly between the water and the lights. They click on when the actinics do 9 to 9. MH runs 10 to 8.

Have you checked for a leak? found small leak near chiller (i dont think that has been there the entire week as i pulled the chiller a few days ago to clean the air filter and probably caused the fitting to come loose at that time.

How much does your skimmer pull out per day? not much except for yesterday had it set wrong and it was full (2 cups?)

Do you do water changes while you sleep walk? LOL

the tank ran up to almost 87C (i know now that is way too high) without the fans but that was when the chiller had a completely clogged air filter. i have not tried to run fanless since.

mcallahan, what temperature controller are you using to trigger your fans? mine came with a probe for each fan that i assume you are supposed to place inthe water? but i do not see a way to set the trigger temp.

    Thanks!,

  10. Hi ,

I'm new to the hobby and purchased a complete system last week. I'm running 75gallon tank with a 20gal sump. I have 2x 54w T5 actinics and 250W MH. I'm running a 1/10 hp chiller and 2 small fans in the hood. I'm seeing about 4gal a day water loss and I'm wondering if that is in the normal range?

The fans only run when the lights are on. The chiller is available to run 24/7 but only clicks on occasionally at night.. Temp is set to 77. I am not seeing any water loss at night (i have to verify this by drawing a line)

    Thanks,

  11. Hi everyone,

For those of you tracking the lineage of this tank, I just wanted to note that I am the proud new owner.wave.gif I believe Brooksreef! was the original owner. Tim added a lot. Tim was super great in helping me move and setup the tank and in being available to answer ALL my questions over the last week. I'll post some pics in another thread once everything settles down from the move and i get all the inhabitants staged the way i want. I am happy to answer any questions anyone has about the setup just give me shout.

  12. Hi,

I'm loking for a really pretty starfish as a gift for my wife. something interesting, or crazy colors, or intricate designs. please let me know what you have. I'd like to pick it up tonight if possible.

    -Madness

  13. thanks!,

Wow, I hadnt considered that either. I can make sure they dont share the same outlet but i will have to check to see that the outlets are ties to different fuses.

and thank you for the "welcome"

Aside from the fact that you generally don't want an aquarium near other expensive electronic equipment. The only concern I would have is that the aquarium may be on the same electric circuit as you other equipment. Due to the high electrical demands of todays aquarium lighting I would recommend that it is on it's own circuit not shared with a lot of other devices.

Best of luck and welcome to ARC.
