  1. I have probly 35 gallons of RO/DI water amde up and i have 2 extra 250w MH you can use to heat the water up. LMK 512-971-1925

Thanks, I hope it helped, but I'm afraid we might have been too late.

I did a 36 gallon water change tonight, but the Blennie, and the Clown are still just lying on a rock panting for breath.

We'll see if they make it through the night, but I'm not optimistic.

  2. call Aquatek immediately and ask....450-0182

Well, I called Aquatek (since I bought the heater from them, and was assured it couldn't possibly explode, that was in fact the main selling point of the heater).

I was told the manager wasn't avaliable, but they would be sure to let him know.

    Can't say I'm very impressed.

  3. Just got home.

Apparently the heater that a LFS sold me and promised would be great for my salt water tank exploded today while I was at work.

All of my fish are dead or dying, I have a wife and daughter in tears.

I have setup on old Fluva 405 with a bunch of carbon in it, I only have six gallons of SW with me, and it is cold with no way to heat it.

Is there anything else I can do?

    Thanks,

    -Dan

  4. So we went down to Fish Business Friday evening (also went to RCA but didn't buy anything).

Talked with Shane for a while and wound up with...

    six more nasarius snails

    six more margarita snails

Skunk cleaner shrimp - This guy is wild. He mostly hangs out behind a piece of rock, but will occasionally just start shooting all over the tank. At one point yesterday he was actually walking upside down just below the water surface. He has also tried to clean the Clown and Blennie with limited success.

Bi-Colored Blennie - Was a little worried about him at first, did not seem happy by the time we got him acclimated and ready to put in the tank, but he was swimming around eating algae yesterday and seemed pretty happy.

Thinking about maybe a Hippo Tang next, but I'll probably wait a week or two for that.

  5. Do/will the Nassiruis eat copepods?

I would like to get a mandarin somewhere down the road, so I want to be careful about adding anything that might make that more difficult.

The wife and I are thinking about going down to the RCA sale tonight to look at some stuff. Just want to have some idea of what is appropriate before we show up. Try to minimize the chances of an impulse buy :D.

What about adding an urchin and maybe a few emerald crabs?

BTW, the tank is cycled and seems stable, but is still a new tank.

  6. Ok,

The 75 gallon seems to be doing well. All of the parameters are good.

We put our first live stock in it last weekend. One small clown that is doing well. Screaming all over the tank. :D

we also added 6 bumble bee snails, 18 (?) snails, and one nassarius snail.

I think one of the snails isn't doing well/is dead, but everyone else seems happy.

We are having a bit of a problem with algae, but from what I understand that is probably normal/to be expected at this stage.

So, what should we look at adding next?

I "think" I need some more CUC stuff, it seems like the algae is getting a bit better, but there is still a lot of it.

    Suggestions?

    -Dan

  7. Should be fine. Mine do that as well, even when they have been in the tank for a long while.

Thanks, everyone seems happy so far.

We also got a clown fish yesterday. He(?) has been flying all over the tank checking everything out. Seems to be having fun. My daughter has been having a lot of fun just watching him.

  8. Hi,

Picked up about a dozen snails yesterday for my tank.

They seemed to be ok last night, but most of them have spent the day hanging out at the very top of the tank right at the water line. Is that normal, are they just getting acclimated to the tank?

All of my parameters are good. I took a water sample into Shane at Fishy Business yesterday and he checked everything for me.

  9. It is an in sump skimmer.

I have it elevated just a bit so that the outflow is just above the water level in the sump. Nothing new lately, just a new tank. I think the tank is cylcled. All of the readings have started to stabilize just in the last day or so.

  10. I've had my skimmer up and running for about a week.

This is on a new tank, with nothing but live rock (and some hitchikers) right now.

Today I came home and the skimmer was producing a lot of foam, i.e. filling the chamber with very wet bubbles.

I slowly opened the valve (per the instructions) to try and get the skimmate adjusted. However, I now have the valve all the way open, and have even started to choke off the air intake, and it is still producing large amounts of very wet bubbles.

How should I adjust this thing?

    Thanks,

    -Dan

  11. Approximately 15lbs of live rock. Four good sized pieces and some little chunks. Was base rock, but it does have a little coraline growing and some little feather dusters.

Also has several baby (quarter sized or bigger) serpent star fish, and a pretty purple and green mushroom or two attached.

30.00 cash, or will trade for a Koralia 3-4, interesting soft corals, or possibly a fish.

    I'll take it!

    PM Sent.

  12. Have you checked your parameters? Just curious what your water is telling you. . .

    Dave-

PH 8.4 (That is a bit high, right? should I do something to correct it?)

    Ammonia .25

    No3 20

    No2 .5

    Salinity 1.027

    Dave-

Good questions. I tested last night, and everything was in acceptable range, but the Nitrites are starting to rise (think I have that correct).

I'll check again this evening and post actual numbers.

  14. Honestly, I think I would change it. I think tap water usually has a lot of phosphates in it, which can cause major headaches with algae. You'll probably have a diatom bloom (brown scum) either way, but it will be much worse with tap. It might not be a problem for you at all, but then again, it might kick off so many problems that you get a really rocky start with your new tank.

    What would you suggest?

A few water changes? I have 9 gallons of RO/DI water, and three of SW right now. I won't have a chance to get to a LFS again until Saturday.

I could do a 12 gallon water change tonight, and another 15 on Saturday?

    -Dan

  15. I'm in the process of setting up a 75 gallon tank.

Currently I have about 100 pounds of live rock and a snail (hitchiker) in the tank. After a couple false starts I "think" I have everything up and runing (got the tank drilled, got the sump up and runing) except the Skimmer (pump should be here Thursday).

When I made up my saltwater I used regular tap water (didn't know any better). So my question is, how bad is that, and should/can I do anything to correct it? I was thinking maybe I should do about a 20% water change this weekend after I can get some pre-mixed SW from a LFS?

    Thoughts?

    -Dan

  16. This might be a dumb question, but...

How reliable is this AutoTopOff system? I.e. how do I set it up to make sure I don't dump a bunch of water all over the floor because the pum gets stuck on or something?

    Thanks,

    -Dan

  17. At the suggestion of several people we decided to have our 75 gallon tank drilled so we could use a sump without hanging a box.

We had Shane at Fishy Business drill three holes in the back of the tank, and he did a very nice job.

However, after having it up and runing for about 24 hours, we are noticing how loud the flowing water is. I'm fairly sure the noise is coming from the water going over the overflow(?).

Is there anything we can do to help mute the noise some? Put some sponges in the boxes maybe?

    Thanks,

    -Dan
