  1. what kind of problems do you have with those cheap timers at lowes or homedepot? I've used those cheap mechanical timers from lowes to run 2x250w metal halide and 2x94w PC before and they worked perfectly.

  2. How much of a discount will you be getting. I'm looking for a 400w icecap ballast (~$180) and a protein skimmer needle wheel pump (sedra ~$80). There's a 10% discount per item + 10% off total at customaquatic so my totals comes out to be $211. Will your discount be lower than that price?

  3. I'm looking for:

    - 1 2 Pounds – Half Gallon Bulk GFO Pellets Ferric Oxide $39.99

    - 1 3 Pounds - 1 Gallon Bulk Lignite Aquarium Carbon $16.20

    - 1 7 Pounds - 1 Gallon Bulk Calcium Chloride for Aquariums $16.99

Can you tell me how much you can get it for? Thanks

  4. I think it'll be cheaper in the long run to get an RO filter and mix your own saltwater. Each 5gal bucket of red sea salt last me few months at the minimum. All you need is refractometer to measure the salinity when you mix the salt water, it's pretty easy.

  5. My little Royal Grammer had been hiding most of the day yesterday, only coming out to eat. This morning I can still see it in the rock hole with a flash light. Around 3pm I saw it dead on the sand, its mouth wide open (looked just like when he defended his hole from one of the firefish before) and 1/4 chunk of its tail fin missing. I immediately check my waters parameters and it was all good. The suspects are the two purple fish, this pair had their "hole"/home right next to where the RG usually hides. I did see the RG and one of the firefish battle once; the RG retreated to its hole and opened its mouth really big trying to fend off the firefish (happened about 1 week ago). I haven't seen them fought since, and they did swim together throughout that 1 week. So I'm still puzzled why the RG died all of the sudden. I dont know if my purple firefish are mated pair or not, but they have been spending a lot of time together these 2 days, versus before they just swam around the tank separately. They do show a lot of aggression today even toward my sailfin tang (extending their fins, and raising their spike). Has anyone had similar experiences or different experiences to share?

  6. My tank is 72x21x37, it have been running on 8 T5 bulbs for years when my friend had this tank. Would the current T5 fixture be able to give enough light for anemone (I dont have any anemone yet)? I got some buttons at the bottom of the tank and they open up really good with just 1/2 of the light capacity on; so I'm not sure if metal halide would cause trouble for the zoas higher up in the thank. I'm looking to upgrade to metal halide in the future; do you guys think 2 250w bulb will do? or should I get 2 400w or 3 250w.

    thanks

  7. A lot of times diatoms are caused by the water you are using to make saltwater. Are you using tapwater, or do you have RO/DI?

When I filled up the tank for the first time I used treated tap water, but I have RO/DI filter for future water changes.

  8. Hi everyone, I'm totally new to saltwater, even more scary is that I have never had a freshwater tank either. I got this tank from a friend of mine; the maintenance guy crashed his whole tank so my friend just gave up saltwater. Before getting this tank from my friend, I had no intention of keeping an aquarium, let alone saltwater aquarium; but now I'm glad I got the opportunity to get into this hobby. The tank is custom make it's not rectangular but the rough measurements are 72x21x37; the 37" height really sucks, I can never reach the bottom of the tank with my arm. I started the cycle about 1 month ago, as you can see from the picture the tank is having diatom bloom right now. So I got about 50 snails from Mama few days ago, they seems to love the glass more than the diatom on the rocks and sand :( . I also got Zoas, buttons, urchin, cleaner shrimp and some other stuff from Mama; they all seems to be doing ok. I also got 1 clown in there, that have been there for almost 2 weeks. He seems to be doing fine, last time I checked my water parameters it was 0 Ammonia, 0 Nitrite, ~10 Nitrate, and ~ 7.8 pH. I got those API test kit, so now sure how accurate the readings are on those levels. Everything I got in the tank seems to be doing OK so far (knock on wood).

Here's my setup now, please let me know what you guys think.

    ~200 gal Tank.

55 gal sump, divided into 3 section, In -> refugium -> return; skimmer placed in the "In" section, got some cheato, calupra and mangrove in the refugium (thank you Reeflover for your macroalgae and live sand)

Two 48" T5 fixture, total 8 bulbs 54w each. I'm planning to get 2 400w Metal halide in future.

Only 1 power head in there right now, waiting for 2 more koralia 4 in the mail.

    Sorry for the long post
