Super Actinic Reef Spectrum - New Product Launch

Check out our new Super Actinic Reef spectrum LED fixture, which uses our brand new high-power 400nm UV LEDs. I tried to capture the fixture's capabilities at Aquadome, but this video doesn't do the fluorescing colors ANY justice. We are using some of the world's most efficient UV LEDs, so you have to see this fixture in person. Hence, I am going to loan this fixture to ARC members starting on Black Friday. Juiceman is first in line, but let me know if you would like to borrow it next week for a 24 hour period. It is a 48" fixture with 75 degree optics.

Ok, picked up the Super Actinic Spectrum from Build My LED today.

If you're already used to LED's you will not see a huge difference in pop from your corals. However, the difference in the brightness of the pop between my VHO Super Actinics and the BML Super Actinic is very substantial. Here's some pics of the tank and corals to get an Idea of the power and spread difference.

Before you look, bear in mind the colors are never as vivid in pictures as in real life, and also

What you're seeing is 2 6' Super Actinic VHO's on the front and rear of my tank at 320 watts total

the 4' Build My LED Super Actinic Fixture at about 75 watts.

Overall, the BML is noticably brighter than the VHO's. For all the Halide users out there, I think the BML would have WWAAAAAYY more effect on the flourecence of your corals compared to the VHO's. Thanks Nick for letting me check it out. I'll definitly be switching my VHO's out in the near future!

Nice pictures! I just built an all-UV 12" fixture to compare against the Super Actinic spectrum, and the result was really impressive. Here are the side by side comparison pictures, which were not edited for color. I will build a 48" fixture in all 400nm UV for ARC members to demo, if anyone is interested. The coral in the middle of this picture looked fake under the all-UV spectrum. After seeing the new fixture on our tank, I think I need to rename the Super Actinic to just Actinic smile.png

Would the Actinic or UV fixture produce much par or are they mostly for accent/florescence?

PAR is typically defined as radiometric power between 400 and 700 nm. Since our blue and royal blue LEDs are very efficient, they will produce a lot of PAR (micromoles/m2/s). However, a PAR meter that is calibrated to have a sharp cut-off at 400nm is not going to count any radiation below 400nm into the final PAR reading. Hence, even though our UV LEDs are extremely efficient, they will produce less PAR than an equivalent 450nm LED.

On the first sight of the UV vs. Blue Spectrum, it is noticibly not as bright as the blue spectrum. However the UV by them self, REALLY POP Greens and Reds. It had little effect on Yellow and very slight on Blue.

Once I had my full lights on, and I added the UV light to it, you could only see a small difference in the corals that I knew would pop. I think they were extremely over powered by my other LED's already installed.

Definitly a neat view by it self But I don't know how much effect it would have on a full fixture with other full spectrum fixtures in the mix. then again I only tried a 1' bar with a 30deg optic.

I'm not sure why and maybe Nick can help, but the water looks VERY cloudy when it's just the UV LEDs. It's pops any greens and reds.

Sounds good. You can borrow our Super Actinic Reef fixture and the pure UV fixture. Both are 48" in 75 degree beam angle.

As for the cloudy look with the pure UV spectrum, my initial guess is it linked to the human eye's poor ability to perceive the short wavelength light. The brain is probably trying to overcompensate for the lack of visible light. I'll dig a little deeper and get an answer for you. Until then, remember that the UV fixtures are pumping out A LOT of light...even though they look dim. Never look directly into the exit face of the fixture.

Are you still loaning out these lights? I'd like to add some lighting but not sure on which one. I really am liking the UV but would only need a 24". I'm using a 10g now but I'm upgrading to a 34g Neo Nano and think my single par38 bulb might need some help.

Definitely. I have a few different combinations available right now, so call or email me and le's find the right spectrum for your tank. Wih the holidays, we are in the office between 9-6 Wed through Fri this week.

I don't have too much to compare to given that I pretty much jumped back into the hobby with LEDs from BuildMyLED, but about the only thing that is not growing very well is the rock and sand. smile.png SFS, LPS, and softies are all growing great, tons of coraline growth as well. The majority of my coral have only been in my tank for a about three months many less. I picked up a couple SFS in the beginning of December that are now about 4 to 5 times larger then when i put them in.

I'm currently running to 36" fixtures, the first I added was the "standard" custom reef spectrum, the second was a super actinic that I customized slightly. Because of the odd shape of my tank (1/4 circle) I will be buying one more smaller fixture for toward the back corner. It will be another BuildMyLED. rock.gif
