Derry
Two questions about gluing up PVC: 1) Are there any issues/concerns/risks involved when gluing Sched 40 parts to Sched 80 parts, and when gluing SpaFlex to either? 2) What's the difference between "standard" PVC cement and the "rain-or-shine" version? Thanks! Derry
muddybluewater
No problem glueing, rain or shine is a hotter glue that supposedly will work if the surface is wet but I don't trust it wet. just be sure to clean everything good before you glue it. offroadodge
+1 about glueing, if u use the purple primmer it wont leak,(straight cuts, de-bur the cuts if using a hack saw, and when u put them together push together and give them about a half turn and hold). It wont leak. I have made a 1" Y by gluing everything together.
caferacermike
From your local pipe-fitter. You don't need primer if the pipe clean. Cut it straight, debur it using a pocket knife, swap the cement dabber around inside the fitting first, then around the pipe and then finish by doing this once again to the inside of the fitting. Push the pieces together, twist it once and put in position, hold for about 20 seconds as the viscosity of the glue can hydraulically force the fitting from the pipe. You are not gluing anything together but instead you are binding the chemicals that make up the pipe to the fitting itself, much more like welding. The hot glue is excellent for gluing when there is water present. It couldn't obtain it's UL and FM approvals if it did not. There is absolutely not need ever for schedule 80 pipe in the home aquarium. In fact sch10 would be your most ideal size as it will allow 3 times as much water to flow through it then sch80 will. What many people fail to realize is that the internal pipe diameter shrinks for each schedule. Sch80 is only HALF the internal diameter of sch10. So when you are trying to flow 600GPH on a suction return through 1", keep in mind that sch80 1" is actually only 1/2" pipe and therefore cannot pull 600GPH. Derry
Thanks for the knowledge, Mike. The question of sched 80 came up b/c the used OM SuperSquirt I picked up a while back has sched 80 unions already attached. Can you point me to some good local resources for sched 10 fittings? caferacermike
All of your local hardware stores tend to stock 10 and 40.
