1. can't keep anything alive in it, I was out of town for several months and I don't have the patiences to start over, so I am thinking about selling it. I have the 22 gallon bow front, which I think is called Reef ready (it has the thingy in the back) and it comes with a stand and a light which I've used for all intensive purposes for about a month. The light is not a T5 or anything special like that, but it does have a 50/50 bulb, I think it is either 45 or 60 watts, and I was able to keep softies and GSP under it (they look beautiful under it by the way). It also has 2 inches of sand and some rock (which I can only assume is no longer live rock). It's a pretty set-up. I will sell it all for $180, cash. Please let me know if you are interested. Catch me up on yahoo messenger or PM me for my phone #. ([email protected]) The stand is black. The tank is all glass and seamless.

Thanks,
Candra

  2. Get the product called stability; any LFS will have it. It is basically all of the cycling bacteria that a tank needs. It tells you to add a certain amount each time that you add fish/livestock. I used it on a new tank with only established live-rock and have had only one fatality and that was due to temperature. I warn you though - you must keep up with the doses for the 7 day duration or your tank will go back to zero.

Will do, on need to do it for 7 days, and it should help my tank levels go back to normal?

Oh, is it something that they would carry at petco, there isn't a lot for LFS's around here. If Ihave to drive to Temple that's okay though.

    Thanks,

    Candra

  3. Went out for coffee with my friend, When I got home I saw three dead fish and the the other twwo almost dead, I had removed the coral beauty earlier, and removed the two almost dying ones, they are good now in the other tank except they are clowns and not getting along well with the other clowns. I took out 10 gallons of water and then added 20, and I still have the spike, it is not an ideal situation for six fish to be in a 22 gallon tank, but I guess it is better thanuffering in a tank that now needs to finish cycling again. I am thinking about taking all of the LR out of the 22 and putting it in the 45, but that gives my fish now where to hide, I'll have to leave the corals, I am just so upset. Any idea what to do and how long it will take? Also, ammmonia is undetectable in my 14, but it is not finished cycling, so I can't really put anything in there either, meanwhile. Help.

  4. Ammonia checks out at 0ppm and

Every one else seems okay, I haven't seen my sixline wrasse yet, I added some biozyme (nitrifying bacteria) and my tank is only 3/4 full as I switched to a bigger one yesterday which I am sure is responsible for the spike) I know a water change would help, but would just adding the last 10-15 gallons make a difference? It would be like doing 25-35% water change

    Ammonia 0ppm

    Nitrite .5 ppm

Nitrate between 10 and 20 ppm

pH is low at 7.8, so I know I need to bring that up, but thank goodness it is low, or else I probably would have had a crash with the nitrite so high!

Oh, I removed the coral beauty to another tank, and she seems to be doing better, but this is only temporary, as this tank is too small for her, but at least she's not lying on her side and pale any longer.

    Thanks,

    Candra

  5. Just let the stability product do its thing. Test your levels daily and watch the levels come down. There is plenty to die and be processed.

    You said the D word...yikes ->

I like him  I think he's pretty, and still to little to be mean as heck. He's only about the size of a quarter. That being said , I am sure that he will be a mean little cuss in the future.

  6. i have a 45 bowfront, but it comes with a stand that matches and has pc lights retrofitted into the hood.has an emprorer 400 power filter and led moonlights.

Thanks for the offer, the only thing I am looking for is the tank. I just bought the stand, am buying an MH for it this weekend, I just want a bigger tank for the sake of my foxface.

  7. I think I might have something that will fit. I will check tonight.

What size is your current tank?

    Dave,

My current tank is 29, that I am looking at upgrading to. There aren't a whole lot of stores in Killeen, so I've really only looked at a few, and what I am finding is about 45 gallons. It would be awesome if you have something that would work. Please let me know.

  8. Well I do care how big, it needs to fit on my stand, which is 36 by 12 1/2. A 45 (tall?) will fit, but the cheapest one I can find is new and is $130 bucks. Is there anyone who sells cheap aquariums? Or anyone who's got one that size for sale? I don't care how tall it is as long as it's length and depth will fit on my stand.

    Thanks,

    Candra

  9. Two of my tanks I purchased already cycled, the third one, which I cycled myself (and is midcycle right now) I did with a pair of dalmation mollies. They were for my son's room and he wanted fish in it now. I also used live sand and filled it full of live rock. the molly is doing fine and we just added a domino damsel the other day, also doing just fine, I haven't tested his water yet this week, but I am guessing the only thing I need to get down is the nitrate, based on the behavior of the fish. Sorry that didn't really answer your question.

I just started using a Stability to help cycle my 34g Solana. The live rock, from what I can tell, does not have any decaying material on it or it is cured. Do I need to introduce some kind of decayable matter to help get the initial ammonia spike? i.e. a cocktail shrimp. Or will the tank cycle without the waste?

Also, how long typically does it take for diatoms and the first sign of algae to show up? Thanks.

  10. It's some sort of starfish... lol I can tell you that much, It is VERY tiny, and blue gray on the top, white on the bottom. I've read some stars are good and some are bad, which one is this before I get rid of it or put it back in the tank! It's the small gray thing in the middle of the picture just above the bright white stop.

    Thanks!

  11. I have no idea what any of you just said... LOL. I will look around this weekend and see what I can find, or ask at the LFS next time I go in. As far as the dishwasher goes, they got the entire thing, but paid me money for half, LOL. Oh, and I actually learned from experience that jet dry and fish don't mix. He knows better now, but my three year old dumped an entire container of dishwashing detergent in a fresh water tank... At least they were goldfish, but they all died :)

    Candra

  12. long story short I traded a 26 gallon cadlights aquarium for half a dishwasher. I got it today after much fighting and being a b****. Well, it was in deplorable condition, the water parameters were alright, but the condtion of it was horrible, it was FILLED with waste, I did about a 90% water change and ran a hob filter on the back to clear up the water a little bit. Well, it all is crystal clear now. Right now all I have in the back is a floss filter with carbon in it that is catching a lot of crud, but I need to get stuff in the sump. What do you guys use for filtration in your sumps.

    Thanks,

    Candra

    1. Oh

I know you weren't trying to flame me, I just wanted to let you know what I plan on doing. As far as petco goes the new one in Harker Heights has a very well informed aquatics specialist, who has acutally kept saltwater fish before, and she is very knowledgeable, unfortunatly this is not the case in most stores. I did do the research before I purchased him, or rescued him rather in my opinion, and understand fully what it requires ;)

    Candra

I wasn't trying to flame you for having him. I just wanted to state that they need a bigger tank so others don't make the same mistake. I hope I didn't give you the wrong impression.

As for Petco, I think we all need to boycott buying any saltwater livestock from them. The conditions they keep them in are deplorable and they give terrible advice to people that don't know any better. Maybe if everyone in the industry quit buying from them they would quit carrying SW livestock. I read on RC that someone asked just to see what answer they would get, how many yellow tangs could they keep in a 10 g. The person working there told them 20!

  13. I would get the foxface out as soon as you can for his sake. That is a big fish for that size tank. Even if he is still small he will have the mentality of a big fish and not like being confined.

I am curious how you know your angel doesn't nip if you don't have corals yet, or did I miss something? Just be prepared to have him start nipping especially on anything new put into his realm. Not saying its a guarantee but just a good possibility.

I would try to leave some type of actinic light on your tank to supplement your MH. You will like having the blue added to the spectrum as will the corals. It also gives you the ability to do a sunrise/sunset effect on the tank.

I do have some corals (mushroom, some yellow star polyp, some small frags of digita that are doing okay, but would be much happier under better light, as well as better color.) that do not require as intense lighting as most, but decided to upgrade lighting so I can put some in that require more intense lighting, since I can't add any more fish, and I love all the colors I can get in there too with the options of other corals. I mean, I am getting this light this weekend, so it won't be much longer. And as far as the foxface goes, I am planning on getting a larger tank soon, as soon as I can afford it (maybe for my birthday at the beginning of April), and as soon as I do the research and am confident the move won't harm them I will be doing so. Also, he is much happier in my tank then he was in the tank at petco, maybe not as happy as he could be, but much happier!

  14. It all depends on your evaporation rate. I had the same problem at one time, but yes, essentially you're trying to get it .001 per day. If you don't have very strong lighting, I'm guessing it'll take around 6 days.

As long as you're not rushing to get it higher, you're fine. Honestly, 1.023 isn't THAT bad, but it should be around 1.0265.

I add about a gallon of water every other day, so it's not too bad, I just put a lid on it, so I am hoping I'll see a difference with evap there. Maybe I should remove the lid while I up the gravity?

  15. Instead of adding freshwater to your top-off, add saltwater at a salinity of 1.030. Depending on your evaporation rate, it should rise gradually. Do not try to rush this process.

I read no more than .001 per day? So if it is 1.023 today get it to 1.024 tomorrow, or should I do it even slower, like maybe over the course of a week?

  16. If you're putting them in your 29g, I'd be careful doing that with any sort of angel in there.

Metal Halides are the one of the best, if not the best on the market., and for a 29g, depending on which you get, they would be amazing.

From what I read on your introduction, your tank is a bit over-crowded, so you'd want to be careful of what you're actually putting in there.

Also, your salinity needs to be at 1.0265.

    Good luck. :)

My angel doesn't nip, I keep it pretty well fed :P (thank goodness for a good cleanup crew), and like I said, I plan on removing 2 fish when my other tank cycles, about 2 more weeks, that would bring me down to four in there, and two are smaller, I also plan on removing the foxface when he gets bigger or upgrading to a bigger tank in a month or two. I know I need to raise the salinity gradually, what is the best way to do that, mix some water that is a little bit more concentrated and add it as I need to top off?

    Candra

  17. So yeah, I want to start putting some more corals in my tank, since I have enough (or more than enough) fish already. I will be buying a Metal Halide this weekend (250 W), so I am wondering, since the tank has been running for 1 1/2 years, and the water is in good condition, and I do weekly weather changes of about 5 gallons, is good lighting the only thing they really need, or are their supplements, etc that they need, and what needs to be tested besides, the basics (like calcium, hardness, alkalinity, etc.) I use RO water for my top offs and changes. Oh, and would this light be good for 'nems also, I'd like to try them as well if it will work. And should I leave my 50/50 light on as well as the metal halide, or will the MH totally overpower it. I like it because it is acetinic, I read somewhere that is necessary for a certain biological process.

My water parameters are as follows (what I am testing now)

    pH is 8.2 to 8.3

    Ammonia 0

    Nitrites 0

    Nitrates 0

Specific gravity is very stable at 1.023

    Thanks,

    Candra

  18. Welcome. :)

My family owns a ranch pretty close to Ft. Hood!

    And yea, a bit over-stocked! But I can't blame you. :P

Well, in my defense, the o clowns are going in the 14 when it has cycled. :P And also, I plan on rehoming, either with someone else or in a larger tank in my home, the foxface as he grows, I just felt so bad for him in his 8*8 cell at the LFS, that I had to take him home with me, he was there for over a month!

  19. Hello, Every one, my name is Candra and I live in Ft. Hood (I hope that is okay). I am a new reefer and have a 29 gallon tank that is overstocked, but I can't help it, I love the fishies. I also have a 3 gallon FoWLR, although, it is probably too small for fish and he'll probably go to my 29 when my sons 14 cycles and I put my o clowns in his F0WLR tank. We have, in our 29, a pair of ocellaris clowns, a coral beauty, a royal gramma, a six-line Wrasse, and a one-spot foxface. We also have a few soft corals and thanks to mdavis735 we have a few montiporta digita frags as well to see how they will do with our lighting, although, I plan on upgrading in the very near future.

My seven year old son has a 14 gallon bow-front tank as well which will be FOWLR, right now it has live rock a molly and we added a domino damsel today, we'll see how that goes.

My 3 gallon has a very tiny maroon clown, and right now is FOWLR, will probably change it over to coral and inverts.

I am an army wife and mom to four kids ranging in ages between one and eight. I have been reefkeeping since February 12, when I purchased a year old tank off craigslist, wish I would have held out for a larger one.

Anything else you'd like to know about me, just ask.

    Candra

  20. It will cycle but not as hard as a new tank.

+1 for not reusing old water. Why use old water when you probably need a water change anyways. Not to mention you'll be stirring up all that crap that will pollute old water even more.

Most healthy fish can handle a move.

Contact Prof as he has absolutely gorgeous rock right now, I'd personally say it's the best I've ever seen. Also has hundreds of pounds of sand for sale. He just bought a used tank and needs to get rid of the extra.

Well, my fish are as follows, a Coral Beauty (this is the one I worry about) 2 o clowns, a royal gramma, a onespot fox face, and a 6 line wrasse.

Would they survive the cycle or nitrate spike, this stuff should prevent that?

Will a 250 MH be enough light for a 45? I have some feather dusters and corals also.
