  1. For what it is worth I would like to share my experiance with haveing a young tank and useing quick fix methods to correct problems. I have a 20g long tank that I was exited to get going. I allowed it to cycle for mabye 3 days (unaware at the time of the cycling process) Through out the next 30 days I had been haveing trouble. I have gone through 3 fish and a banded shrimp. I began to suplament the tank to try and balance out the levels. Then increased the water schedule to keep it clean. Through research I realized that in all my attempts to correct one problem I was creating another. The last thing that I did to get rid of my cyono outbreak was lower the lighting time. I didn't go as drastic as three days, 1day off, 1/2 day on, 3/4 on, full day on, 10hrs on. This did help control the cyono to a cofortable level. I continued to have issues, then it struck me that not alowing the tank to run it's mill I was preventing the healthy orginisms from catching up with the unhealthy. Leading to an unbalanced tank. For about the last 2 weeks or so have left the tank alone manageing my feeding and manually removing some of the cyono, and ditritas. My tank is looking great now everything is propagating open and full.

I know that I am new to the hobby and do not have the experiance of most reefers. I just thought that mabye the results of my reef would help the conversation. Thank you everyone for the help that you offer.

Sorry logged in under friend of mine (this is the sanfords not Capt. Obvious)

  2. I have two 400W MH "Blueline" pendant setups. These are independant horizontal pendants with 6500 K bulbs and ballast, which I have been used for 1 year. I would take $50 for each set. This horizontal pendant reflector will accommodate 175W - 400W. and is sold by Champion Lighting for $110 each.

  3. Plumbing is easy, give a shout if you need a hand.

well I am always down for help....it has just become more complex than need be...I set it up so I can experiment with an algae turf scrubber...that and I am attempting to go completely "powerhead-less"...ambitious I know...but...what the hell right?

if anyone wants to help feel free to PM me

  4. I received a PM about this and have not heard back to the reply I sent. I need to buy a new oven as mine burned out last weekend, so it will be about 2 weeks before I order the new filters (about $250 for my 300GPD unit). I think you'd be perfectly happy using the tank as it is perfect for this type of thing, kinda why I use it for just this purpose.

sorry about that...I have been in plumbing hell....I borrowed 2 cans from Cool Breeze but then I bit the bullet and got my own RO today...but I may take you up on using it some other time

  5. I have no idea apparently theyre 15 at aquatek for a 10. so id imagine something along the lines of that. Just as long as its not 40 like petco. The 20 tall would prolly work as i need something that i can drill a hole that will sit above my sump. Lets come to a general consensus on the 20 tall. Pics?

dunno if you will find ANY 10's that are NOT tempered....most those little guys use all tempred glass....1t may have been 15.99 for the 5gallon and 24.99 for the 10gallon...don't remember exactally...just know they were cheap.

  6. I have been noticing some type of purple algea in my tank. I was hopeing that it was the coraline finally starting to form but it doesn't look like it at all. For one it isn't attaching to anything it is just lieing in my sand and floating around in little balls at the surface. I have lost my banded shrimp and my cardinal with in the last two days. All of my perameters are fine. Salinity was at the cusp do to evaporation but nothing to be alarmed about. First the banded shrimp went. I found him caught in the current of the powr-head, he didn't look so good after that. I pulled him out of the current fed him alittle bit and then watched him die. I figured it was the stress of being flung around like a nerdy kid in grade school. Then the next day my cardinal killed over? Frantic I checked all of the levels and did an emergancy 1gal water change with a fresh water top of to soften the water. Just wondering if someone can help me solve the mistory of the dieing fish.

Thanks have a great day at the reef.

    CYANO!!!!

  7. As has been said, there is no wisdom to be given without parameters.

How about you describe what you want from the tank and then people can add their $0.02. List the size of the tank as well.

I wasn't looking for anything in general...wasn't for my tank just some general rules people use themselves....

I.e. "4 watts of heater per gallon"... or whatever

  8. LOL whenever someone says "rule of thumb" it reminds me of that great scene from the Boondock Saints.

me too actually...even though it isn't entirely true...but then again what would hollywood be without propagating misconceptions :)

  9. looking for some basic sage wisdom.

    examples would be

    lbs of sand/gal

    wattage of light/gallon

    lbs of live rock/gallon

    amount of powerhead and qty/gallon

    sump overflow/return per gallon

    cleanup crew size

    how much to feed/how often

    refugium size per gallon

    etc.

I am well aware that there are no HARD SET rules in this hobby and it all depends on tank residents etc...just looking for some general people's tidbits of info...pick your brain if you will...

    let the information sharing begin!!!
