      The chance of contracting a pest accidentally at some point during the life of the tank is roughly equal to the chance of getting one in initial live rock. There are ways of dealing with pests without a teardown...

      its a game of odds. Dipping and QT'ing helps but things can still get through. That being said, adding pounds of un-dippable live rock vs. small coral frags that have been dipped...not the same thing.

      It's like cancer: everyone can get it (pests), but when you start smoking (adding live rock), you drastically increase your odds.

      I think it's easier to check for pests on a single frag or coral than it is on a couple of hundred pounds of live rock.
