  1. I had a lot of luck with freshwater dips for zoos. I use a Lugols dip with Furan-2 antibiotic in RO water modified for proper PH. I leave them in there for about 5 minutes then give them a rinse in another bucket of RO water before putting back into the tank. Note that this is for Zoo Pox and zoo eating parasites specifically.

What color are those Stars. If brown you may have the dreaded one that eats zoos. Though it is very unlikely. Most likely they are the white/Blue ones which besides making your coraline blotchy are harmless and (I think) benificial as it keeps making more space for coraline to grow in my tank.

I'm more worriedd about you saying that something was floating around... Do you mean you had free floating polyps? If so glue that sucker down and let it be for a couple of weeks to see how it goes. I had one get loose from a frag that took me about a week to fish out of the rock. Glued it down and it is doing great now and is about to bud.

i got the zoas as a golfball sized colony that i just had on the sand bed, when i added two power heads to battle gha (thought i didnt have enuf flow) i saw the whole colony tossed up and gently floating around my tank :-O but that was like in May when i also spotted the starfish.

  2. This also happened to me about a month ago. My zoas and zenias were very happy and healthy. Then I decided to make things even better by adding a small amount of Coral Accel to my 30 gal nano tank. Everything stopped coming out except the mushrooms who seemed to love the stuff. Only after several pronouncements of 'perfect' water and correct temps did I deduce that this was probably the culprit. I am learning that if 1 capful works for 60 gallons, 1/2 capful might not work for 30 gallons. It isn't linear.

I have stopped dosing and my guys are slowing coming back to life. Good luck! Ann

on my water changes i do 5 gallons once a week on a 29 gallon tank. My only problem is that i dont have a RO/DI unit :( but the only thing i add to my water changes is iodine about one every two weeks, and that s a half of a cap. and once a month a bout a half a cap of trace elements. i was adding phyto plan a powdery mix that i added about once a week that caused a HUGE G.H.A problem that i am still battling rite now. i cant seem to get rid of it. its not the light stringy stuff, its the tough short (under 1") in length, the best example would be like whiskers. No idea how to get rid of it.

  3. HERE IS A PIC OF THE STAR FISH THAT I KEEEP FINDING AND ELIMINATING FROM MY TANK. I WILL TRY AND GET ANOTHER PIC TOMARROW OF THE STAR FISH AND ZOAS. I FIND THEM MUNCHING ON CORALIN ALGEA ALOT, BUT MY BACK GLASS IS ONE HUGE SHEET OF PINK CORALINE ALGEA, LIKE I PAINTED IT ON WITH A BRUSH. THEY ARE USUALLY ON THERE.

  4. Nathan, where are the zoos that are having problems located in the tank? Are they on the sand bed, attached to rocks, or somewhere else? I ask because I know some of mine on the sand be will close up when hermits, snails, and other things are to close or travel on them. Some fish will also perch on zoas as well. If this happens too much they will not be open enough to process the light. I imagine this is not the case, but just wanted to throw it out there.

i only have one fish that is a blue devil, he never goes close to them, and my only shrimp is always perched under some rocks, they use to be free floaters on the sand bed but i oved them to a rock after i found them bouncing around my tank one morning. usually my snails and hermits leave them alone, but i havent seen them open for about a week now and the stalks are starting to look very thin :(

  5. i have medium water flow, a 130 watt light on a 29 gallon tank they are located in the middle of the tank. so all of that should be good, the starfish should be on a earlier post that i had i will see if i can post a link. but the thing about the spots i will have to check on. when i get home i will try and get a pic of them, but my camera does suck quite a bit. but the star fish i am almost certin they are the blue/white ones.

  6. i noticed in the last two days my zoas are on the decline. all water and everything checks out just fine, i did a five gallon water change just to see if it made a difference. so far it hasnt. everything in the tank is doing just fine, a while back i found some astria (spell?) starfish in my tank and i have been eliminating them on site and i dont see any atached to the zoas, is there anything else i can do?

  7. get rid of it. Someone said they eat zoas...

I have noticed my zoas have been looking a little down lately. I just wonder where it came from. I have had the zoas for about 1 year now and they always opened up great and ever since I got 2 new cleaner shrimp from (hate to say it PETCO) I noticed the zoas not opening and almost retracting. I wonder how it got in my tank?

I just looked on the back glass of my tank and guess what? 7 more, i saw my coarline algea going away but i thought it was because i wasnt adding iodine as often and just stuck to straight water changes to battle a GHA problem i have developed over the past couple of months. Are they safe to grab with your hands? how do i check my zoas to see if there are any atacking (which i am sure there are) them?

  8. I know this is kindof a weird ? but.......

So my job requires that my hands get covered in oil, to dirt, mud, grease and so on. So anytime I have to reach into my tank to clean it I have to be dang sure none of that stuff is on my hands. What would be the best way to clean the hands and so on? Right know I just wash them with dishsoap and rinse (forever) to make sure my hands are clean of any soap.

How do some of you prep for putting your hands in the tank?

    Xenia

So i noticed you have GHA and you mentioned that a tang would be good for removing that. I have the same GHA and i need it gone cause its making my hair come out trying to remove it :o I got a 29 gallon tank with 1 blue devil who kills anything his size or smaller, and one cleaner shrimp. What would be a good tang for that? I need help!

  9. I an starting to purchase stuff for a new tank i wanna get up and going when i move. I just wanna be able to transport live stock from one tank to the next. wondering if anyone has a controller they are willing to sell. i am from minnesota so it would need to be shipped here. as for good faith i can send a check so you recieve it first before you send the controller, or set up a escrow (spell?) with a major bank if you feel comfortable with that. I just dont know an exact time on purchasing one yet. to be honest i am building a custom stand and i want a controller that looks cool cool.gif as well as fucntions for basic time temp ph ect......

  10. I did think about using a metal frame with like 2" ridged pipe for support and then welding cross bracing ect... then have a wooden exterior that just used magnets to hold it in place, it would be easy to remove and would require the least amout of cutting and welding. that might be a thought.

  11. Take a look a the stand I built in my blog.

It should have a link to where I found my plans.

It's for my 75, but it's probably the same dimensions for your 90.

It's rock solid and very open at the front and back.

Wow! Thats exactly what I need. I can wire about anything, but when it comes to framing in something there are some grey areas!

  12. So I have decided to take on building my own stand. The only for sure thing I have rite now is the top. My friend works for a granite shop in my town and I traded some electrical work for a granite top. Its 1 1/2" thick and its 28" x 55" ( I wanted to see some of the granite  ) But the dimensions of the stand are still up in the air. I know I want to keep it as low as possible for cleaning reasons, but tall enough for the underside for sumps and skimmers and pumps and ect. I plan on going almost no expenses spared on the filtration system. Nice sump with a large skimmer, there will be a light under the tank, there will be switches and recepticals on the inside of the stand. There will also be large access spots in the fornt and back for servicing of equipment. Anything anyone else would reccomend for the stand? Type of wood (treated or nontreated) heights? Any good blueprints out there? For weight of tank and all I was told to expect about 1200lbs, is that accurate? I just want to do things right this time!

  13. Wow, I am glad that I asked before I went out and purchased it. I will have to take a trip to the "Little Apple" and see what the LFS have to offer. NOBODY in my area offers anything close to what I need. It is true about the temp but last month if I tried to pump the water outside it would of froze in a second, I do crack open the sliding door if iI see my take starting to warm up, but it cools everything down at the same time. I work construction and we saw -53 F with windchill out side in the middle of January!!!! Now we are expected to get 10" of snow today!!! Fun stuff. But anyway thanks for the advice and I will continue my search for the ultimate tank somewhere else.

  14. Here is some advice.... dustin21 is selling his 90 gal oceanic tank, stand, canopy, 29 gal sump, and i think return pump for that same price i think. Its a bigger tank more options come with it, and ......... Its right down the road you could have it as soon as you pick it up. look in the for sale thread and you will see it .

I am from Minnesota, I think he is from Texas. If not then I would buy it in a heart beat. Thanks for the heads up.

    Bulkheads for overflows

We can provide you with bulkheads that fit your overflow holes. You do not have to buy them from us but doing so will

If you choose to not buy our bulkheads you will need to know:

The holes are drilled for heavy-duty schedule 80 bulkheads.

The holes are NOT drilled for light-duty schedule 40 bulkheads.

  17. Mine is the Reef octo110 but wasnt near that much $ it is rated up to 110 gallons hence the name. I dont have frags yet.... but I spent around $450 on tank and stand(no canopy yet), $100 on 2 koralia 4s, got old sand from a guy in San Antonio(just cleaned it up real good as it had some dieoff going on), Made my own sump for $20 approx. 20 gallon, and a $65 on the return pump. Also got my light from this site for $100. The rock is what gets you I paid $3.50 a pound for live rock but used 20 pounds base rock. There are alot of small stuff like heater, test kit, thermoter, etc.

thanks for the advice guys! its gonna save $ (and mite raise the cost of the tank) but is gonna ROCK! i cant wait to get it up and going !!!!!!!

  18. My octopus is great but havent had much experience with other skimmers, It pulls out alot of junk, I empty it out every other day or if it fills up.

could i get a specific model #? there are a lot of different ones and they range form like $200-$4000, I never knew they could get that expensive!!! i know they can go a lot more expensive then that!!!! thats pushing buying a new snowmobile!!!! but the fish tank i enjoy just as much or maybe even a bit more since i can look at it 24-7.

In the set up how much $ (if you dont mind) did you spend with out live rock and frags and so on?
