  1. Are extra chemicals really needed? I mean there are literally dozens of additives from "Mineral Blocks" that dissolve slowly to Stronium, Iodine, Iodide, Calcium, blah, blah, blah....

1.) Are any of these really needed on a regular basis?

2.) What do you use and why?

Two LFS that I have just visited said, "Essentially....No". "If your tank is well established then the need to add anything much is unlikely." Perhaps just maintaining calcium levels for rock and clams...

I can understand if you check the calcium level and it's low. But, "Trace Elements", "I-Tech", "Coral-Vite"........

I only add Phytoplankton, and Cyclopeeze Marine Plankton for the Clams and other filter feeders and a big Mineral Block for most trace elements and calcuim to be supplied. I have no issues with my Pistol Shrimp or any shrimp and everything seems healthy for the past 3 years.

    Just wondering.....

I add Coral Vital and Iodine on a daily basis and I am about to start using B-ionics 2part solution. True with a good established tank you will not need to add the chemicals to clean the water, but the good trace minerals are gonna be removed by skimming and evaporation and unlike the ocean they do not have an area to work their way back into the eco-system. Supplements are good, just don't get over spendy.

  2. Ok, I have him caught and chilling in my quarantine tank now. I don't need a yellow tang as my buddy found me a pair of them. I am wanting to trade for a hippo or a nice selection of SPS as this guy ain't cheap. Let me know what you have. He is a great fish, just doen't like my other fish and I really want a hippo and a yellow for my girls.

  3. I have a 5" or so Desjardini Sailfin Tang that I would like to trade for some other livestock for my tank. I am looking for a hippo or a yellow tang. Or some colorful sps for my tank.

Please reply back with what you have.

  4. I am getting ready to start up a new tank and i have a pretty good idea on the sump I want to build. I just wanted to see if anyone has done something like this or sees any problem with doing this thanks for all your input.

    sumpsetup.jpg

The container on the left will house two mangroves a couple of live rocks and a dsb. Water will be pumped from the main sump by a powerhead and returned via a 1" bulkhead with pvc as it is higher than the main sump. The inlet from the main tank and outlet from the mangroves will be let out over LR rubble. protein skimmer in the first area of the sump (which i wont need after the mangroves grow out) and then on to a refugium utilizing mirale mud and then on to the main pump back to the tank. The refugium and mangrove lights will be on an opposite cycle of the main tank. Well, what do you think?

I've seen setups like this before with a remote refugium. I like your ideal and design, but I would split off the drain from the main tank as to have fresh water from the tank gravity feed into your refugium. You can have this tap off the main drain and eliminate any need for a pump to supply water. I still also believe that you will want to keept he skimmer as the mangroves aren't gonna be enough to get rid off all that fish poo

  5. I feel happy as long as my TDS is below 5ppm on the output side of my RO/DI unit. I double checked my inline meter with one of the handheld meters and it is within 1 both +/-. Rich, you don't even want to know the ppm of the water from HEB around here.. I was like holy crap, my tap water is almost as clean as their water as well as WalMarts.

  6. I have a cart that can be used to move the tank. I built it a little over a month ago and it worked awesome to move my 240. I am in Killeen, but I come to Austin. Also if there is anything that you are getting rid of, please let me know.

  7. I have a few corals for sale/trade. I have the following:

Large 3 head torch coral that is about to split on each head

    Small rock w/2 watermelon mushroooms

Small rock w/3 blue/purple striped mushrooms

Small rock w/6+ green semi-hairy shrooms

Small rock w/4 Orange speckled mushrooms

    Medium rock w/ 20+ red/orange shrooms

    Various Kenya trees

4 pieces of Hammer Coral 3-5 heads each

2 pieces of Frogspawn 5 or 6 heads each

LARGE open brain coral 3 mouths. It is green/blue

    Large 5" DesJarden Sailfin Tang

I am looking for cash or trade for SPS frags or a med/large hippo or yellow tang. I am looking for bright/hardy species of SPS

  8. I am changing direction with my tank and a have some soft corals and stuff that I would like to trade for SPS or sell.

I have a few nice size rocks (softball or larger) with yellow polyps (50+), orangish/red mushrooms (20+), blue mushrooms (4 or 5), green ricordia (6 or 7), 2types of Kenya trees, rocks with 100+ zoos (green/orange)

Just let me know what you have. I would rather trade as I feel both parties get better deals.
