My question would be... what are you going to do if your mag spikes because the ATO is adding too much? Dilute the ATO? The reason I prefer dosing separately from ATO is it gives you more control over the amount going in from day to day - too much yesterday, add less today; too little yesterday, add more today... dosing through the ATO seems to lack that level of specificity... or am I missing something?
The ATO is pretty consistent, needs refilling every 3 days like clockwork. I plan to start low and gradually increase Mg and test at least every 3 days until i feel its consistent. Not sure if that's possible, just seeing if anyone else out there has had success with this.

Looks great to me.
Another good idea are pod "condos" by enclosing rubble in plastic gutter guards that way we could transfer to the DT periodically to repopulate.

We think it may be time for us to start testing/dosing magnesium. Our mixed reef tank has been running for a few months and only plan to do 10-20% water changes every other month or as needed (skimmer works great). We plan to dose our 5 gal ATO with a predetermined amount of magnesium chloride based on current test results. Anyone see a problem with this? ATO only contains RO water, nothing else, so solubility shouldn't be an issue. We run a reactor for ca and alk. Also the media claims to have Mg, but from what I read this helps give an initial boost then Mg levels drop.
Any recommendations for Mg test kit? Plan on buying the magnesium chloride from BRS,
Also anything else we should consider doing? Strontium? As mentioned above, this a mixed reef, so not interested in ULNS.
Thanks

My husband brews and I'm sure he wouldn't mind helping you out. We live in Round Rock, so it'd be easy for you to swing by and see his set up.

...Boiling probably wouldn't do anything helpful....
This statement is inaccurate.
I did said "probably". It would be accurate to say it depends. I agree with victoly, not all carbon is created equal. I assume some sources would benefit from boiling.
-
What are you looking to accomplish by heating the carbon? Boiling probably wouldn't do anything helpful. However heating to ~400 C would be remove most impurities.

I'd recommend getting them from Get Pumped Saltwater, one of the sponsors. ARC premium members get 10% off all purchase's. I have three of those led's and I wish I would have done that. I've only seen them for sale used on EBay not much less than the retail price.
