  1. I always felt every Tang except tanked raised yellow tangs and the kole tang types are ick magnets. QT like everyone said. Always cracks me up when I see YouTube tank build videos when they get a Tang it always gets Ick.

  2. So in theory this would mean that people with predators could achieve denitratification that you would get in a reef tank. Sweet! How would you apply this in a home aquarium. Would you just use a 5 gallon bucket and create a 9 inch bed and run your inlet and outlet through it? Anyone set this up in the past?

  3. What is the definition I a remote DSB. Is that just housing a DSB in your refugium or are you talking about a large tank hooked up to you display tank that is solely a DSB? For example if you have a 100 gallon tank is a remit DSB just having a DSB in your refugium area in say your 30 gallon sump or are you talking about setting up a 55 gallon tank and connecting it to the display and making the entire tank dedicated to being a DSB? How much denitratification or you getting either way?

  4. Hello

I've been hearing about this LED on a few forums and was curious how many do you need for a 3 4 or 5 foot tank setup. Was thinking 40G breeder 75G 4 foot or 75G and 100G 5 foot setup

Also curious how to avoid the ceiling mounts if possible on LED lights.

  5. I've been debating the DSB. I heard they can be hot or miss with getting right. Would a good sized sump refrugarium provide enough denitratification. In a 55 or 75g setup at 4 feet in length I would be probably getting a 40 gallon long sump so I could fit a 4 foot sump assuming it would fit in the stand. I've heard systems go slimmer less but I not sure if I experienced enough to try that out.

The last tank I had I had the 2 inch be like you described so a DSB would be new to me.

  6. Lol it's actually my wife who is encouraging me to get a tank. I've been against it for time reasons but she thinks it would be beneficial for the kids. The money involved was the other thing that kept me back as well but I ten to be very simple and frugal.

  7. 60 in 75g. I like that. I thought they only went 48 or 60 inches. Longer is better in my book plus I could push for a smaller bristle tooth tang with a 60 inch tank. I could also drop in a 48 inch sump with that extra length

  8. So are you asking if your estimate is reasonable?

If its reasonable and if the equipment I have put on the planner are appropriate

Sorry I forgot to set the doc to public. Try it now

  9. Oh I forgot to mention. I will plan on seeding my rock and sand by buying some established LR and Sand from a LFS or a member here. 5 lbs of LR and a Cup of Live sand should do. I will cycle with Dr. Tim's One and Only.

The overall goal is a tank that is fairly stable and medium bioload. I want to get the most effective equipment I could afford to maintain the stability of the tank while not killing my budget. I plan on hardy or tank raised fish and softies and LPS. I may decide on an SPS or two but they would have to be the easier to keep ones. I'm all about hardy specimens

100 gallons is my limit in size. I feel any bigger could be too much maintenance for my liking and the livestock I prefer for a reef build do not require large tanks. The large amount of sand on some of these plan is due to attempting a deep sand bed. I planned builds with one and others without it.

  10. Hey all,

I created various budgets for builds from 40 to 75 gallons. It looks like my range is anywhere from 1500 to 2600 depend on the build and what I could find used. I'm pretty sure I got most of the start up costs in there but wanted to if anyone had tips or advice on what I picking out for my planner. I was hopin to get a build under 1000 but really can't see that happening unless I find someone with a complete build that I like.

Also bear in mind I have very little DIY experience so stuff like a stand or drilled tank would be a bit intimating plus I also lack the tools. Actually hooking up a RO unit is a bit puzzling right now for me lol (I use to buy water from LFS or use Aquaparms deionizier when I ran my 55G last time I had a tank

  11. Current USA Novaextreme 4 x 54 watt if I do a 55G setup

    Tek Light 6 x 54 watt if I do a 75G setup

Do you need a chiller for any of these setups? I'm trying to avoid a chiller and thus staying away from MH and going for a open aquarium vs canopy. Only issue with that could be that we tend to keep the house warmer in the summer at 78 degrees. LEDs seem out of my budget unless I find a used fixture that is a killer deal

  12. Live rock plus skimmer works well. Had success in the past with a 55 gallon live rock and a HOB skimmer. Only issue was the slimmer wasn't plus one but nowadays there are high quality HOB skimmers like a reef octopus. I have an emperor filter for additional water flow and chemi pure. A lot of people mod aquaclears to house cheato as well in smaller tanks.

I've also seen a 40 gallon reef with a modified aqua clear as its only source of non natural filtration and he run no sump.

The issue with regular filters if you are using LR the filter as the potential to become a nitrate factory and could do more harm than good

  13. One thing if yOu plan on keeping feeders in especially if you have a trigger (Which I would not recommend for this size tank) is that triggers will nip or fish will escape so your feeder could be injured and getting infections. Also triggers enjoy decapitating feeders so you will have fish heads and parts in your aquarium so watch for waste and rot in the tank. The trigger I had in the past loved to maim feeders and especially was fond of decapitating feeders.

Also if you keep feeders in the tank expect your eels and lions to be very lazy around the tank. A lion will typically follow you around the tank begging for food even if you just fed him when there are no fish to eat. They become a lot more active when follow you around. Also far easier to train to prepared food this way since they will eat anything that touches the water.
