  1. The diagonal a no-go. My canopy isn't big enough, and the VHO and MH bulbs would be almost touching. So, I put the MH retro toward the front of the canopy and the VHO setup toward the back. It looks decent, though I need more actinics and one more MH retro.

  2. So I bought the VHOs thinking they'd be a good temp setup until I can find another MH retro and 2 single-bulb T5 retros, but I didn't think it through and it's not enoug light. They're 36" long, so there's not enough room at the ends for the MH retros. So I was thinking about putting the VHOs at a diagonal, with 3 actinics and one daylight. Then putting the MH retros on each side of the diagonal, so one MH would be at the front left side of the tank, the other at the back right side.

    Is this a decent setup?

  3. So I bought the VHOs that were for sale here. It's a nice setup - ARO ballast with 2 daylights and 2 super actinics by the UV Lighting Company. The flourescent green in my mushrooms and candy canes looks awesome, as does my GSP. But the entire tank has a pinkish hue with no bluish tone at all, and no clear white. Just sort of a very slightly foggy pink. The seller did say the bulbs need replacing.

So, is the pinkish hue due to old bulbs or the wrong brand, or what? And if it's old bulbs, which should I replace first, the daylights or the actinics?

  4. You could use a power head. Why isn't the finger over the ends trick working? Put the entire tube in the water so there is no air. Then pinch both ends closed. Move to overflow and only release when you have the high end submerged and the outflow over your receptacle of choice. If you have soft tubing you could move the overflow tube out of your sump into bucket. Then you could stir up the gunk and let it flow out.

I don't know why it's not working. I guess it's just not strong enough to move upward to go over the side of the tank.

  5. Other than the usual put-the-tubing-in-your-mouth way? I'm just too much of a wimp to do that. I have gunk in my overflow boxes that I need to siphon out. The way I start a siphon is to put the entire tubing in the water to get rid of all the air, then keep one end in the water and put the other end in the bucket.

But since I want to clean out the overflow, I can't do that. I tried holding my fingers over the ends of the tubing until I get one end in the overflow, but that's not working, either.

Is there some kind of little gadget that will act as a vaccum?

  6. Yep, I recall that from when you were setting up my new tank. I've been watching for either a tomini or Kole and finally found one. I can't wait to get it, and I'm crossing my fingers that everyone gets along. If not, I don't know how I'll catch it. It took me and Chatfouz over an hour to catch the tomato last Friday .

  7. HI, Troy. I might be interested. I googled it, but I see different pics. Can you find a pic that looks like him? I definitely want him, if I find out from some of the gurus if they think he'd be OK with my Lo.
