  1. this is the build thread i have been checking everyday and im getting antsy!

Thanks! This is the slowest build I have ever done! It drives me nuts to go to work everyday and see it unfinished. I am finally making some headway in the past week. I should get temple partially done this week(gonna run out of epoxy). I was thinking today of just getting some Portland and sand and using it like grout . Would be a lot cheaper than epoxy. I also hope to install the LED lights in cabinet and the exhaust fan in the cabinet. I have 2 ballasts for the LEDs. I will break the long string into 2 runs. One will have a switch on the cabinet door wired in so that when the door opens the lights will come on. Second will have a tight concentration of lights over fuge section of sump and will be on a timer reverse of tank lighting.

I should be able to buy the controller this week. And if temple gets a few layers up I can add the sand.

Also of note I ordered a few barnacles from EcoCeramics last week. They looked awesome and I had to get a few.

And finally, I think I have decided to kick it old school and make the tank an SPS dominate system. Bring on the colored sticks!!!

  2. I have decided that the monster chiller will not work. I did not run any plumbing for it. It was going to be too big to get stuck in a cabinet. It will be repurposed at the farm. If we get thru summer without too much financial strain(summers are slow) I think we are going to start growing sps corals again and it will do great on a system like that.

Wavebox will be sent north too.

  3. Made some progress today! Finally.

I took the afternoon off work Friday and worked on the tank(while still at the office so it was odd) I managed to cut and fit all the drain and return parts. Then I came in today and glues everything while nobody was here to breathe the glue and primer.

I think it will work well. I have 1 joint I was not able to fit together but I will get a coupling on Monday and get it done.

Gonna try to get temple built this week on lunch breaks..... Then finally get some water in this glass box!

  4. Sorry I misunderstood, I think I get it now. As long as the top of the water level of the sump is below the bottom of the opening of the overflow.... I think gravity should push everything thru and the pump will be pushing a lot of water into the drain line.

Almost like a really long pee trap in a sink. It will probably slow the draining down a bit but I doubt it would cause any backup. You might consider putting a union or 2 in there to disassemble annually and check for deposits in the line. And if your "engineer safe" make 2 drain lines for some redundancy.

LOL I'm probably making this way moer complicated than it needs to be... Sorry I'm a Contractor!

  5. Pushing the water that far and the increase in elevation will effect your gallons/hour. You may or may not want to use a bigger return pump.

Look up the head loss chart for your pump and then guess at the reduction based on distance. Then make a good guess at what you feel comfortable with.

You are going to loose some flow based on distance, I doubt the elevation change and elbows will that much of an additional increase in reduced flow..... Very interesting situation and decision.

  6. Got return pump and 4 tubes of epoxy in yesterday.

Stopped by AquaTek today to see if they had bulkheads. They did and they fit!

Also of note, I have been waiting on Trigger Systems to begin make skimmers again. I want the Bursa. Got an email from David last week that it will be a while and he is not sure when they will stop making sumps and make some skimmers. So I am going to get something else......

Short list was diablo from reef octopus and economy skimmer from eshops(both have great pumps that are under mounts)

Guess what I saw on the shelf at AquaTek today! Diablo!! It is mine now :)

Now I just need some time to put all this together.

  7. Got my plumbing parts!

    post-2530-133851368444_thumb.jpg

FlexPVC even sent some candy. Should come in handy when the work starts.

Checked the bulkheads, the 1" drain holes fit nice. The 3/4" return lines.... Not so much. I think I ordered the wrong type. They are they same outside diameter as the 1" but they have thicker walls to give a smaller inside diameter.

Will need to order new ones tomorrow.

Anyone know of a local store that carries bulkheads?

  8. Ordered my return pump Sicce 4.0 and a ton of epoxy for the temple assembly today.

Also recieved part 1 of 3 of plumbing materials from flexpvc.com. I hope the rest comes in tomorrow. I have a buddy coming down to visit this weekend and I plan to put him to work helping me plumb the tank!

I should have a lot of 1" and 3/4" black flex line left over when I am done. Of anyone needs 10-15' send me a message.

  9. im too broke for a controller, my gf would kill me if i didnt take her out because i spent more money on the tank

    LMAO

Fond memories of my wife(then girlfriend) and all those fun conversations of how much time and money I was spending on that $@#%^ glass box with fish in it!

Good luck to you, hope you fair better than I did! LOL

  10. You are on the right track but that monitor is a bit overkill.

    Check out auto autotopoff.com

A top off system is great and much easier and more stable than topping off by hand. Essentially you have 3 parts. A freshwater reservoir, a pump and hose to move the freshwater to your sump and a float switch that turns the pump on when the water level in your sump drops(and off when it raises high enough).

A good goal is to get a reservoir large enough to hold about a weeks worth of evaporation. Depending on several variables in your house and the season you should need 4-10 gallons a week.

    Good luck!

  11. Dude...that temple is cooler than kool-aid.rock.gif Is it bigger than the last one?smile.png

    Cheers,

Thanks! It is cooler than look-aid! LOL

This one is just a little smaller but has much more detail. Last one had 5 layers 4" tall and this one has 10 layers 1.25" each. Plus the stair detail on this one really makes it. I kinda ran out of material so I may do a 3 sided temple instead of 4 sides. Or I may use some rock in the back.
