  1. did anyone ever take or post pics from the Strictly Pediatrics office? I would love to see their setup!

The pediatrician's office I work at only has 2 boring ol cichlid tanks...

Poor fish, I see kids all day every day banging their hands against the tanks bc they're so interested in the fish, or watching them scattered when they hit the tank... :D

S.P was probably smart enough to put the tanks on a higher platform to where that won't happen, or at least I hope they were.

If anyone took pics, please post em!!

  2. I have a 72 inch coralife fixture over my 180gal SW tank and the hinges on the lights broke off!?

I dont know if they're necessarily called hinges, but it's the piece that's attached to both the aquarium rim and the light fixture.

Anyone know where to find them locally? I found some on www.drsfostersmith.com but I wanted to try my luck around town first.

    Thanks!

  3. I've had that same problem numerous times, what I did was setup a free photobucket account (photobucket.com). If you're not familar w/photobucket, it allows you to browse through your comp and upload a photo, then it "generates a code" which you can copy and paste into an ARC forum and your pic will appear. Hope that's useful!

  4. We have been running one for a couple months with no problems.

How many GPH is your overflow rated for? These are by far the CHEAPEST overflows Ive seen! And being in this hobby, cheap, but of good quality, is DEF what i'm looking for.

I'm just hoping I can hook everything up right :/

  5. They will only loose siphon if your hose is lower than the U pipe. I wouldn't worry about that. I use a hang on and never had a problem when my power went out. We all prefer drilled tanks, but cost and practicallity prevail. I recommend the eheim, or mag drive pumps. There is a poll thread in the other section addressing this exact debate. You will find more info than I can give you there.

So when searching for an overflow box, how do I know which size to get? Are they like protein skimmers, in which they're rated for "up to so many gal?" Thanks for your help!

  6. Coming from a newbie, I'm not sure a 180 is such a big leap. The only big difference that I understand so far is the volume of water changes and the stability (outside of the financial factor). A 180 will be more stable that a smaller tank. The water changes will be a pain, but she may already be used to that if she's had fresh water.

Yes, I have 4 FW aquariums so i'm use to the water changes. And I've helped set up and stock a SW tank, although I left most of the mechanic/plumbing work up to the person whose actual tank it was. SO that's why I'm lacking knowledge on setting up sumps and refugiums and such.

  7. you need a skimmer, a return pump, a heater, and preferably a bubble trap. there was a recent thread about bubble traps. if you look it will tell you exactly what that is. some people will also use the sump to keep a UV sterilizer, extra live rock, plants, sand, and a secure area for breeding pods.

like they said, the bigger the better, as long as you can afford it(that's where i have problems  ). just make sure you get a sump that's not too tall. to check height requirements place your skimmer under the tank as elevated as possible off the floor accounting for clearance necessary while removing the skimmate cup. then measure from the floor up to the recommended water level of the skimmer. some water will drain to the sump when your pump turns off, so you need to know how much cu. ft. of water will drain. add the determined height of drained water to the height of water during normal use, then you will know the maximum water height and how tall of a sump to buy.

Are there any specific brands for skimmers, heaters, or pumps that you guys would recommend?
