  1. My algae tank attached to my nano-reef is teeming with tiny jellyfish looking things today. I have never seen these things before. They are maybe a millimeter across. Their body is a clear sack and the rim of the sack has what I would guess are tiny tentacles. They move in a pulsating way like jellies. Anyone seen anything like this? I am guess they are medussa larvae. They are amazing and I would love to know what I have.

  2. Anyone here make their own glass tanks? I am considering make my own tanks and I love glass so if I did it that's what I would want to do. Anyone have experience with this? Or anyone know any good references for glass tank building?

  3. I had a very nice time at the frag swap. It was cool to be among so many other aquarists. I enjoyed showing my little tank to people. A very big thank you to whoever GAVE me several beautiful frags. They seem quite happy in my tank. I am sorry I forgot your name, but if you are reading this speak up so everyone knows how cool you are. Thanks to Ed for the algae, I set up a parallel 'fuge and it is great. There are many little stars in the algae, it fantastic. I would have paid for it and he also just gave it to me. I wish I had something to give in return. I didn't think about that my coral are a bit small for other people's tanks

Also, thank you Carlos for hosting. I hope it was worth your while. Thank you for the nice discount :) I am loving my baby giant clam. He seems happy and I look forward to admiring him/her (are clams hemaphrodites?). I can't remember what species it is. Any way to tell?

  4. Oooooh cherry pick. I'll probably take you up on that. Is your name actually Bob?

I was at aquatek last week to get some equipment and I bought a little handful. I was quite happy with it. There is some great coraline on the pieces and some sponge and a nice feather duster.

Anyone else? I am looking for as many sources as possible. More critters the better!

  5. I have a fuzzy green algae all over the rock in my 2L pico reef. Is there any kind of snail that would take care of it? I can't do hermits, the tank is seriously too small for them. They end up trampling the tiny coral.

  6. I would love to get a handful of some critter loaded live sand/rubble. If you have a very lively sandbed I would like to get a bit. I'll buy it or perhaps find something to trade. I am especially interested in sand from fish free tanks. This is for my 2L nano so a handful is plenty.

    Thanks!

  7. I would like to buy one, what's the smallest one you have? Any other frags?

Sean came by and picked up the 3 head frag a little while ago, and left a very generous donation in addition to the price for the frag. I've still got the 3 bigger ones left.

Thanks so much, Sean, and Amy and Dave thank you too! Keep me posted on how it does in your tank. I've very rarely sold frags out of my tank before, so it kinda feels like letting a bird fly from the nest.

For anyone who's wondering, here's an update on Dave. He is not in a coma, but he does have severe brain damage. For several weeks, he was not responsive at all. Then his eyes were open, but no one was home. The doctors were calling it a persistent vegetative state, which he may or may not be able to recover from at all. He has made some progress in the past couple of weeks though. He is now aware that Amy is there and is able to respond to her a little bit, like blinking, squeezing her hand, giving weak kisses, and responding so some requests, although not consistently. At least it is now obviously not just reflex movements. The most impressive thing he's been able to do thus far is put on his glasses and put in an earbud for an iPod. He can shake or nod his head to answer questions, but sometimes the answer (yes or no) doesn't seem to be the one he means. Amy is still there by his side almost all day every day. She gives nightly updates on what's happened that day at Glider Central, and the updates are posted on the "Praying for the Osadchucks" website I posted above. Thanks for all of your continued prayers. It is going to be a long road to recovery for Dave, and there are no guarantees about how much he will recover.

I'd still love to sell the rest of these frags and send even more cash to Amy, if anyone is interested. If I don't respond to a PM or post in this thread (sometimes I forget to come check it) just call me at the office at 339-2020.

  8. I would like a better pump for my tiny reef. I need something that is very quiet as I keep the tank in my work area. Also, it needs to have a low output as the tank is only 2 liters. I am currently using a cheap pump for a 10 gal with a flow regulator on it. In trade I have a little coral that I would be willing to trade. It is about the size of quarter and it is much more red than it is in this picture. Anyone got a good quality air pump laying around?

    Thanks!

Here is another picture to give a better idea of it's size. It is the coral on the right. I don't think this is a good picture of it but it's the only one I have.

  9. Notice I never used the plural. I prefer octopi but I know it's wrong so I just always use the singular.

The short life span is a bummer. I hope to find captive reared octopuses so I know how old they are already.

The new TFH has an article on keep nautileses. They live 15 years. Still I want an octo.

  10. I think the biggest concern is the octopus getting out of the aquarium. I know River City can get them for you. I would go ask Carlos and he will tell you what you need. There are some people on nano-reef.com that keep octopi also.

I would love to hear from someone local keeping these creatures as well.

I will of course seal the lid and add weights. Years ago I was talking to someone at the Texas State Aquarium in Corpus and they said they were lining the rim of the octo tanks with astroturf. Apparently they can't stand touching that stuff.

Right now I don't have a place for it, but I am hoping to keep one in my lab (as a pet) once I am settled. I spend more time in the lab than home so I think it would OK here. I know it would be an attraction to all the other geeks.

  11. It won't be any time soon, but I really want to keep an octopus. I have done a lot of research on them.

Anyone keeping one in Austin? My biggest concern is having a supply of food for them. What are you feeding and where have you been getting it? Also, did you get your octo in town, what species, would you buy another from that lfs etc. etc.
