  1. Guys,

I'd like you to all bow your heads. This is a very sad day.

    From A.J. himself,

"I had to abandon it, when my fiancee that I shared the house with and I split. Can't have a 440 gallon reef tank in a third floor apartment, for some strange reason. ~sigh~"

Women. Can't reef with em, can't reef without em. [/size]

Sorry guys but I'm not buying any of it. Got a good feeling tomorrow is the day! I pledge allegiance to the tank that may or may not actually exist, and to the dropoff...

  2. Amen. Thank you Ian. The first order of business is to formally ratify the group's motto that was selected at last month's meeting: "In Phasmatis Aquarium Nos Fides" which of course is Latin for "In the Ghost Aquarium we do trust". Our second order of business is to open the floor to nominations for the group's theme song. I would like to throw out the first nomination for consideration: Burt Bacharach's beautiful ballad "Any Day Now". Preferably Elvis' version. Any other nominees...?

  3. I hope its not the case but goniporas in captivity are notorious for melting away for no apparent reason. I tried one once that seemed to thrive for about 6 months and then it died off from one side to the other in about a week. GL.

  4. I really think testing is the key when your dosing since it is nearly impossible to get into a predictable routine once your hard corals start to take off. Think about it this way - when you've got a couple of SPS frags in a big tank the consumption is low but once they turn into colonies with a bunch of branches, each growing and splitting into even more branches, the demand grows exponentially. Once I switched over to a heavy sps tank about a year ago my tank's demand changed weekly. In just one year I switched from Kalk to 2-part to 2-part/Kalk combo to a Ca reactor just to keep up. A couple of weeks ago I had to make another change - adding 1/2 tsp/gallon in my ATO to counteract the slightly acidic solution coming from the Ca reactor. Without frequent testing I wouldn't have a clue how much of the various supplements my tank would need.

  5. I had a similar issue. I moved a yellow tang out of my display and into my frag tank which is about the same size as your tank. He was always out in the display tank but became a recluse in the rocks of my frag tank for about a month. After I added a shoal of anthias, which are often described as the social butterflies of the tank, he came right out. I think its a safety in numbers thing.

Similarly to what Brian said, all my tangs sleep in the rocks, out of sight.

  6. Green is the new black in all the new saltwater aquariums coming out of Paris. So if you want to have a tank that's in the now, buy green.

This fish is so ugly he is gorgeous. Great markings and lots of personality. I got him from Divers Den about six months ago. I still feed him live ghost shrimp since I haven't had time to train him adequately with frozen foods. I have got him to eat frozen silversides several times though. Always hangs out in the open, fishing with his little lure. Kids freak out watching him stalk prey and using his lure to distract them. Text is best.

  8. This was a challenging coral for me until I did two things:

    1. I moved it down to the sand bed at about 100 par which is about half the light that the rest of my sps is getting.

    2. I got my phosphate (0.03-0.10ppm) and nitrate (0-1.0 ppm) levels under control

BTW - did you get that frag from me?

The toadstool is very rare - all green head with extra long, neon green polyps. It has become the centerpiece of my tank and its also one of the easiest corals to care for in my collection. Another unusual feature is that unlike most toadstools this guy doesn't wax over. Here's some pics of the mother colony:
