  1. I had a yellow eye kole die up underneath our live rock. It's a pretty good sized fish (about 3.5"), in order to get him out I would need to remove and distrurb all the live rock. Should I remove the rock and distirb the corals and other fish, or let the clean up crew work on him?

  2. I have this huge growth of Dragon's breath in my tank. Now, I would like to try to get some of that growing in my daughters 24G. The stuff grows directly out of a piece of live rock. If it was a normal plant, I would just dig it up by the roots and move it. However, how do you get it to root into a new piece of rock? Do you take a clipping and rubber band it to a new piece of rock? Put a piece of rock on it and hope something roots on it? What? :D

  3. One 12" vertex is $170 and one 12" stunner strip is $40, and i told you i would cut you a deal, and there's not a big difference?

One 48" vertex is $399 and one 36" marineland, that extends out to 48" is $150, and again, i said i would cut you a deal... and you don't see the difference?

Not trying to be rude, but i just offered to save you over $350

I am only now piecing together what you said. So what you have is 1 Marineland 36" Reef (assuming not the doublebright?) and 5 x 12" stunner strips? It looked to me like you were telling me what you paid, I missed the fact you also made an offer to sell them in the last line.

That said, selling them used is clearly a better deal, buying them new is still comperable. Since I do not have a hood, and never ever want to get a hood  that is not a good fit for me.

Thank you for the kind offer.

  4. The one with the most interest (and bang for the buck) has been the Vertex Illimilux lighting fixtures.

I've got a marineland ($150) and five stunner strips 12'' ($220 with adapter)... that's way cheaper that those vertex and that marineland adds a ton of shimmer. The stunner (453nmu) are a perfect blue light accent as well... I'm tearing down soon and the lights will go when i get rid of the livestock. If you're interested let me know, these lights are only a couple of months old and i'll give you a decent price so you don't have to spend $200 on one 12'' strip, lol

The 48" Vertex is $399 and the 48" Marineland is $357 (cheapest I could find it). I'm not seeing the big price different. It also reports to have higher par ratings. Hence, bang for the buck. Also, the LEDs are on a unit where you can change them out in the future. The marineland is fixed. Don't get me wrong, I'm not bashing the marineland unit, but they are definately right around the same price.

The 12" Vertex is $170, so I am not seeing the big difference.

  5. Anyone have or know someone who is using the Vertex Illumilux LED lights. I've been looking to accent my 4 bulb WavePoint T5HO fixture for some time. I had been looking to the marine land LED to add some shimmer and additional light. I thought that with the addition of the T5 + the marineland fixture I would be pretty well set for lighting.

However, I've been constantly looking at options and ran into a few other players. The one with the most interest (and bang for the buck) has been the Vertex Illimilux lighting fixtures.

    Anyone bumped into these?

  6. I've been eyeing the 48" Marineland lights for a few weeks now. They have been getting a pounding of a bad reviews, but unfortunately, the reviews I have read have not been from anyone who has one. I am also curious what other options are out there, I don't see anyone else with the same footprint at the same price.

What has really stopped me was the single power cord. I would like the night LEDs to be on a schedule.

  7. I have a 55G TruVu acrylic tank. I used it for cycling some live rock, and now I am done with it. Being obsessive, I grew out of this tank in 3 weeks of using it and purchased a 125G. Great fish only tank and could be turned into a reef with a little love.

Tank is simple to setup with an in-tank wet dry filter system.

It has a protien skimmer, new pump for the skimmer, and oump for the filter. The lights are old and for a fish only system, I would suggest getting new lights for it. I have an old set of 96Watt PC lighting if you are interested.

  8. thanks eric!

    No no, thank you :)

I'm seriously playing musical fish tanks, I now have 2 biocubes, the aquapod, a 100G, a 125, and a 55G. I had zero tanks in November 2010. Going to need to unload some of this some time soon once I know what I want to do.

  9. Did raising your Mg levels that high have any effect on corals, fish, or inverts in the tank? How long did you take to get it that high?

For me, I did it over the course of a week. I saw no ill effects on anything in the tank at the time. But, I only had a few corals and fish.

  10. At the same time you posted that a couple months back, I also had a Bryopsis breakout. I raised the MG to 2300 for 4 weeks and it knocked it out. Haven't seen it since. I also pulled the worst rock and scrubbed it off to reduce the die off from cluttering the tank.

  11. wow, great growth on the dragons breathe, a lucky find too since finding it available to order is becoming quite difficult, great for sea horse (you should get with "kimP" if you want to get rid of some)

It has been growing like mad. I see it about 1/4" longer each week. How do you transpant it? It just started growing out of that live rock.

  12. Do you know any rule of thumb of in switching from one light sorce to another.

    i.e. 1w PC lights = X w LED?

The marine land fixture also has a larger fixture in the same series.

Marineland - Reef Capable LED Lighting Systems 36" - 48" (I assume the legs EXTEND 48" while the base is 36".)

    • Correct spectral output and intensity for Reef Aquariums
    • Three mode switch for all on, all off, or lunar (night) light
    • 1W 10,000k Whites / 460 nm blue LED's
    • 42 LEDs ( 1 watt)
    • 36 – 10,000K (white)
    • 6 – 460 nm (blue)

What I've read about that is that LED tends to point straight down. Not sure that is a big deal since I am trying to get light to the high rock (in the back) that the T5s don't sit over. If you look at my avatar, you will see a rock wall to the back, the T5s sit up front illuminating the deeper section of the tank (24"), the PC illuminate the back section next to the in-tank filter. I am probably illuminating 12-18" deep water in that part of the tank. Still, don't want to back out of lighiting, I want to enhance it and optimize it.

also worth noting. that fixture currently has 1 10k white and 1 actinic. The 54w T5s have 2 6.7k and 2 super blue. Been trying to figure out what combination of lighting to get in place.

Definately a family affair. Just bought my daught a 8 G biocube and looking for another 8G for my office - or I will upgrade hers to a 14 or 29 and take her 8G to the office. Just looking for the right deal to come up.

    Thanks for the help.
