  1. It went really well. Bruce was super cool and let me borrow a couple hermits, chocolate chip starfish, a banded serpent star, a pencil urchin, a mexican turbo, and a sponge crab. The kids loved it! Some of them were a little freaked out, but most of them got up the courage to touch the chocolate chip starfish. Big ups to Timfish for the tank and the mounted molts. Those went over big too. If anyone else wants to do one for their kids class let me know.

    Thanks Bruce!!!

  2. OK so Timfish made an awesome carrying tank to display the critters and even mounted some molts in acrylic too! I talked to Bruce at Aquatek and he is willing to cooperate with us too. So I am going to do a presentation today at my daughters' school. I'll post how it goes!

  3. Sorry Tim, but you are all alone on thinking that a Tang in a 30g is ok. Yes they are kept in fish stores in tanks that size, but stay there a couple weeks a most where they either go somewhere else or die in the store. I wonder how many more would live if they were kept in bigger tanks. The logic of a Tang being small so it is ok until it grows is flawed. Tangs swim a LOT in the ocean. Whether big or small. Put one with no room to roam and it gets stressed. My brother in law had a Yellow Tang in a 55 that was less than 2 inches. The poor thing paced all the time until it died a couple months later. Tiger's need large areas to live in too. Do you think a 200 lb Tiger needs less than an 800 lb one? How about a dog? Would you keep a puppy in a closet until it got bigger? I feel it is a bad idea to encourage new ones in the hobby to push the limits. They are usually so excited and under informed that they will make bad choices anyway. We all did when we started. It is our responsibility as experienced hobbyists to encourage patience, restraint, and proper methodology. That is not to say that we don't learn new methods or ways of keeping these animals. But something like big fish in a small tank will never change.

  4. Because it is illegal like Mike said. Hawaii is very protective of it's beaches. Good thing they didn't search your bag. From what I have read it is technically illegal to even remove shells from the beach there.

  5. I have to hate. I am willing to bet it is stressed by the tank size. I am sorry to tell you that the 58 will still be way too small. That fish will get over a foot! They need at least a 125g or larger. I would suggest finding it a new home and trying another type of fish.

  6. I read somewhere that the sign by itself makes a house 80% less likely to get broken into. There are lots of alarm companies willing to install a basic alarm system for free if you sign up for 5 years of monitoring. Just make sure to read all the fine print. And NEVER use AMP! Terrible company! I am with Monitronics now and I like them. It's a little under $50 a month.

  7. Hard to say, but it looks like they have red on them which would rule out mysis in my experience. I think it is probably peppermints. The one you had could have been pregnant when you got it.

  8. I go back and forth on this one. I used to always bleed off the first bit of water before letting it go through the DI. I am not sure how your DI is lasting so long though Marc. Mine was used up in 3 months and I don't use that much water.

  9. dang it.....i've really got to stop reading stuff on various forums. I've been really happy with my Vortech MP40ES, but after reading this now i want to order a wavebox and try it out. My tank is almost square 36x37. Would a wavebox work well on those demensions? My MP40 creatses about a 1/2" wave. How much more could i expect with a tunze?

My current set up is 36" x 30". I am using a full size wavebox because I already had it. It creates about a 2-3" wave. You have to put it on a faster frequency to get the wave in a cube tank, but it will work.

I love mine and will never run a tank without one. As Mike said I think it does a better job at keeping the tank clean than any number of powerheads could do.
