  1. They're asterina and I have had the same problem with them eating zoas. I'm not sure if they eat them or just irritate them to death. Either way, you should get Harlequin or Bongo shrimp.

  2. I would be pretty reluctant to put any ocean invert in a tank with coral. If you just take into account how much more ruthless and difficult life is in the real ocean, there's probably a good chance that they will consume whatever is available. You could always test it out if you don't have a lot invested in a tank, but realistically why risk it. Also, unless you do a very thorough quarantine, you never know what else you might be introducing in the tank as well. Just not worth the risk IMO.

Most inverts in a tank (and everything else) is from the real ocean. Unless you're going out of your way to buy tank bred or aquacultured stuff, it's from the ocean. However, the environment the Texas coast hermits come from is far different than a reef. That's why they might be inclined to try coral as a tasty snack. Also, it's not spending any time in a holding tank or LFS so they might have disease or pests. I put a ton of peppermint shrimp I collected from the jetties and they've done fine. They eat all my aiptasia and haven't touched a coral. The same time I added them, I added three molly miller blennies. One starting nipping at coral and the other two started nipping at clams. You are taking a risk with anything you add to your tank, but I would agree that it's even more risky to add stuff from the Texas coast.

  3. Trap wont work devil damsel is large.

Sure it will. I have caught a couple of tangs in similar traps. If the fish is that big, use a 2-liter or 3-liter bottle instead. Cut the top off to widen the opening. Should work fine. I've caught about 5 different fish this way. Just attach some hose or twine to the bottle (I used zip ties) and keep a close eye on it. When the fish goes all the way in after the food, quickly pull the trap out. Works like a charm.

  4. The subject is asking for advice on a HOB overflow so I wanted to throw in my two cents (which is about what my advice is worth). I've always been scared to use them. I know many people use them but they've always scared me. It seems like they would clog or leak a lot easier. Also, I don't think they look as good as an internal overflow. If you're feeling brave, you can get an overflow kit from glass-holes.com and drill your tank. I've drilled a couple tanks and it wasn't too bad. Just make sure your tank is not tempered before you do it.

  5. I'd have to say even though Feldman's research did show the basic concept could be supported after reading his research it's just not worth bothering with. The control samples in his research showed similar results as the treated samples and when a treated tank was monitored no changes could be detected.

In the conclusion he mentioned that carbon dosing does work. I already run a biopellet reactor and it's well worth it. I constantly battled high nitrates and phosphates in my tank before and they been close to 0 the whole time I've run biopellets. I would not run an SPS tank without them. My question is less about biopellets, which I'm a firm believer in, and more about using Zeovit supplements. I'm just not ure which to use or to stay away from (if any at all) since I'm using biopellets and not Zeovit rocks. I'd like to start using the Zeovit stuff since I've seen so many good results online with coral growth and coloration.

Thanks for the info though. I do understand some of the concerns but I have to go with what I've seen first hand with carbon dosing. I will say that it would be overkill for a non-SPS tank.

  6. Ramsey, normally you'd be fine but RCA said it wasn't all shipped. Give them a call first. I bet they would give you some of theirs to get you what you needed.

That's cool. I'll give them a call Tuesday. It's no big deal if I have to wait. I still have about 3/4 of a bucket of salt left which should last me a while. I just wanted to stock up while the gettin's good. smile.gif

    Thanks for putting this together!

  7. I'm getting a custom sump made in the near future based off of this one:

The only difference is mine won't be as fancy with the lids and all, and instead will have 6 filter sock holders and not 3. I really like how this design allows you run more than just one filter sock per drain line and allows the water to run over the top of them. The one pictured is made by My Reef Creations. They're very proud of their sumps though which is why I'm having someone build one.

  8. I run a Nextreef reactor for GAC and a Nextreef reactor for biopellets. I have my ATO unit hooked up to a Geo kalk reactor. I was dosing two-part via a dosing pump but switched to kalk. Once or twice a week I dose Aquavitro fuel and once a week I dose Tech-M magnesium. I need a more accurate test kit to know for sure but I may have a small amount of phosphates and if that's the case, I'll probably get another reactor for GFO. I know that other people running biopellets have had problem with getting rid of all traces of phosphates. I should note that my nitrates are 0 and have been since I've started using biopellets. I can't recommend them enough.

  9. Thanks for that, it's good to know there's some science behind carbon dosing. :) I've been running biopellets for a while now and I don't think I'd ever run a tank without them. I've had no detectable nitrated and phosphates the entire time I've ran them. SPS seem to benefit the most. Most LPS and softies that I've seen actually do slightly worse with the BP's. I'm curious about using some of the Zeovit supplements in addition to the BP's and skip using the zeolite media, since BP's should provide the fuel for bacteria growth.

  10. I would like:

6heads of mohawks and 5 heads of faerydust..$30

10 heads of candy apple reds..$30

PM me with where exactly you're at. I live in New Braunfels but work off of 183 and Oak Knoll.

  11. Is anybody doing this? I've read about some people that are but thought I'd see if anyone local has done this. I'm already running biopellets but wanted to start using some of the zeovit stuff as well.

  12. I've had a huge aiptasia problem up until recently. I tried aiptasia-x, similar products and using lemon juice and a syringe worked best for me. I didn't try using kalk though. I also tried berghia nudi's two different times and didn't have any luck with them. I think since I had a few peppermint shrimp in there, the peps ate the nudi's. I'd be very careful trying them if you have a peppermint shrimp in there since the nudi's are pretty expensive.

What's worked best for me is wild caught peppermint shrimp from Port Aransas. I went out there a couple months ago and caught about 40-50 and threw them in my tank. I went from having HUNDREDS of aiptasia to having about 5 larger ones that I can see. I also cut down on feeding some when I added them to make sure they were hungry. Of course, I've tried peps before and didn't have any luck so I'm not sure why they're working so well (cutting down on feeding maybe?). Anyway, good luck! I know how annoying a frustrating they can be.
