I had just found this too!  Thanks for the internet sleuthing.  For what its worth, if you use the BRS description of "Probe Soaker Bottle" - there's not a lot of options to purchase outside of a few bulk order options!

    "Electrode Bottle" did much better!

Hi I'd love to have both of your offers, but particularly the sand.  I'm also in Leander so I can fly over when you say.

Hey Bill!  I still have the sand available.  I'll PM you some details.

  3. Hey Guys -

I got a bag packed with 4-5 Mexican Turbo, and 2-3 Nassarius (sp?) snails in a bag to whomever can come pick them up first.  Just shoot me a message!

Also, I have 60-80lbs of live sand free to whomever wants it.  Its CaribSea Arag-Alive! Fiji Pink sand, and been in my tank for 5 years or so.  Please bring your own buckets for the sand.

All of these need to go today!  Thanks!

  4. Hey guys -

I had to move on short notice, and unfortunately, I think I'll have to be breaking down the tank.

I have just a few  older fish that I love - that I just want to be homed to a new good location.

    • Mated False Perc Clown Fish Pair
      • One Black and White (male), and one Orange.
    • Coral Beauty Angel

Seriously though - please if you come and get them.  Treat them fairly.  They've always been good to me and my family!

  5. @timfish - I already have the fixture and wasn't planning on upgrading that for the time being.

@mark - thanks for the info. I kind of figured that was the case being I wasn't finding much online with people utilizing that feature of the tank controller.

  7. Hey guys,

It's been 4 months since I tore down my 90g and moved into my first house. At first was set on selling the tank due to some discouraging issues I had late in my last set up, but time cures all, and I'm looking at setting up the tank again.

In my new en-devour I'm attempting to 'build it right' and learn of the experiences from my first ever reef tank. In doing so I've been eying up tank controllers.

There's obviously two main players out there - the Reef Keeper (Elite), and the Apex. From what I have read they both have similar features and various probes and monitors to choose from. The Apex is a bit pricier but generally people say the UI is better, and with the RK you get the PH probe included in the original purchase and all for less money.

But in general, are there any specific differences in functionality or ease of use that should point me one way or the other?

Basically I'm hoping to leverage the tank controller to be an early warning indicator of my tank's health, and also to automate some tasks to keep daily maintenance simple. Because of this, I'll be running the temp/ph/orp probes if I do go the tank controller route.

For hardware, I'm going to initially have a pretty simple set up. In the sump I'll be running a protein skimmer, return pump, heater, and Phosban Reactor. I'll also be running 6x39w T5 lighting with different timers on the daylight / actinic bulbs. However as my tank develops, I would like to have the ability to manage additional hardware if I add it - like Calcium Reactors, etc..

Finally I'd love to establish a wave maker in the new tank. I know these controllers have the ability to control power heads to establish waves in the tank - but has anyone actually used this feature? I haven't been able to find many good demos of it on the web. Is the wave maker program for these tank controllers a glorified start / cut power to the outlet that your power heads are plugged in at? If you have used it - which powerheads would you suggest to use? Or am I better off bypassing the tank controller and spending the cash to go the Vortech route (which I'm addicted to watching demos of)?

And if you haven't stopped reading my long post by now, and are not sick of my barrage of general questions - is there anything cleaver that you are doing with your tank controller that you feel really helps your reef-keeping experience?

    Much appreciated!

  8. Looking pretty good and clean! :) That set up should treat you well.

Just a thought - I see you have your power head facing the same flow direction as your return. You may find it best to face that power head against your return to get some random turbulence / current in your tank.

I've always seen best results having opposite flows - helps to eliminate 'dead spots' in your tank.

  9. Yes, they look really nice as a sizable colony, and yes, like most softies, they'll eventually try to take over the tank, given the opportunity. ;) One more thing to keep in mind with these guys - they do have a fairly aggressive sting. They'll give any gentler corals (read - "future acros") trouble if they start to touch.

    This is so helpful!

My Acans have been awfully crabby lately. I have a ton of these pallys all over my tank - some of which are touching the acans. I didn't realize they had a bad sting.

I for one, have enough of the green pallys and will be taking a razor to any near my Acans!

  10. Thanks for the feed back - but you're really not helping me quell my impulse urges!

Really though - the mouth on the lion fish is only 1/2 inch around? That doesn't seem too bad...

Brook - Will - what kind of fish do you have with your dwarf lionfish?

  11. Hey guys/gals,

I have a 90 gallon, mixed reef tank.

I have several smaller inhabitants in the tank - royal gramma, perc clowns, mandarin goby, various hermits + snails.

I've been eying up the fuzzy dwarf lionfish and would love to have him as an addition - however what's the chance you think he'd make afternoon snacks of all my other fish?

I'm pretty sure I know this answer to this - but I figure I'd ask around to see if anyone had any successful experiences having a dwarf lion in anything but a predator tank.

I'm doing my best to fight the impulse urges - RCA has them on their list for their first friday of the month sale. Impulse urges + SW tanks are no good!

    :(

    Thanks!

  12. I have a bunch of MH bulbs I am no longer using (and I believe a bunch is 4-5 or something like that).

I'm not sure which are still good or not, but you are welcome to them.

I'm by the arboretum - send me a PM if you wanted to swing by. I have hockey tonight so wont be around - but my roomate should be - or you're welcome to come by tomorrow.

Any mine are 150w as well.

  14. For Sale:

My 36" Nova Extreme 6x39w t5 light fixture.

    Will include:

--Legs to mount onto the tank

    --Ceiling mounting kit

--Spare bulbs that I have (got them from the previous owner - not sure if they are good)

Fixture is like new - and works great! I bought the same model - only in 48" - again for my tank!

    200.00

    Thanks for looking!

  15. I have a million of them in my live rock. Really I don't see how it's possible to erradicate them. I used to have your same point of view - they are ugly and I want them out. However, I've come to terms with the brittle star fish. They are filter cleaners and are actually good for your tank's health...so I just use that as an excuse for them not being some attractive.

  16. Looking for a 6x54w 48" Nova Extreme or equivilant.

I currently have the 6x39w 36" model, and a 48" tank. It looks rather silly resting on my glass top =)

So just thought I'd see if anybody had one out there for sell. Be willing to negotiate a trade for the 36" with cash if you were interested.
