  1. Well I ended up purchasing the same Skyline oak cabinet in cherry for 30x12. Neither of the online distributors had the skyline series listed and the guy there even thought R&J wasn't making them anymore. But when I told him Steve (guy at R&J) said they should be listed, the fish tanks direct guy was very helpful and even created a temporary listing on the website for me to order from. I'd agree with you that both sites have impeccable customer service! I'd recommend them to anyone.

I also went with the Skyline to take advantage of the 36" height. I'm excited to get it...thanks for the background!

  2. Thanks for the info and pics Jestep! I'm definitely ordering from them. I was looking at the Calypso Birch stand, but after talking with one of their sales reps the raised portion on the bottom shaves off about 3 to 4" which I desperately need for the protein skimmer height. So, I'm looking into one of the other stands, possibly one with the 36" deck height option.

    Thanks again for your help!

  3. Sounds good. One last question: have you noticed any of your corals getting burned even with the UV glass tube around the bulb? Only reason I ask is my wife would like to cut costs by not having to purchase a new bulb right away and get by with the fixture as is. If you've been happy with the Coralife bulb over your corals then I trust your judgment. Thanks!

  4. Skimmer and test kits sold. Lights still available.

Again, willing to trade for live rock/sand. All proceeds go to my ongoing quest to rescue poor marine animals from the dreadful local fish store and thier evil cohorts the online shops.

My wife is interested in the Coralife light for her nano. What kind of bulb does it have in it now (Coralife, XM, etc.)? I've read and heard the so called UV protection on this fixture doesn't cut it nor does the standard Coralife bulb because they're not UV protected. Is the ballast still in good shape and how old is the fixture?

Please hold because we'll most likely buy it depending on the questions above. Thanks!

  5. I know right! I couldnt even get a comment back from the PUG! I have a real problem with derailing threads.... Sorry guys!blink.gif

No worries at all! Thanks for the laughs and all the warm welcomes! :)

  6. Thought I'd introduce myself, my name is Brent. I've been an aquarist for 18 years (not counting the 10G tank I had when I was a kid). I started out with freshwater community, then moved up to South American and African Cichlids, then to marine. I started out with a FOWLR tank and mostly aggressive fish and found the pinnacle of the hobby to be reefkeeping. I have a 58G Reef and 10G Nano Reef along with a 20G QT. I've been a member of Reef Aquarium Guide for years and can't believe I haven't signed up here until now. It's nice to see people discuss LFS and other local community topics instead of communicating in a forum that's nationwide. I'm so addicted to this hobby I like to browse LFS after lunch several days out of the week. Not exactly your normal office luncheon! ( ;

    Thanks for the Reef Outlet!

  7. I have fine to medium course aragonite sand and also lose some while siphoning. As a result of this depletion, I've had to add more substrate once or twice. I've always used live black and white aragonite sand when setting up and adding, but since I've become more stringent with the quarantine process I wonder if adding live sand to an established system might introduce unwanted parasites/disease. Does anyone know if this is possible or true? Pardon the slightly off topic question.

  8. I used HW for a couple years and wasn't impressed. The mix was deficient in several areas, mostly calcium. I also tried the sister mix made by Tunze and received even worse results. I'm currently using BioSea by Aquacraft and have noticed an improvement. I'd like to use Marine Environment by Aquacraft, but the mix only comes in large batch slurry quantities. Don't let their packaging graphics fool you...it's kind of like judging a book by its cover.

To answer someone's question about where to buy hW, AquaTek sells it as well as Tunze. As far as I know no Austin locations sell Aquacraft salt. You have to call to place the order.

Salt I've used in my years of reef keeping:

    IO

    Red Sea

    Oceanic

    hW

    Tunze

    BioSea
