Salt Qualities

A few days ago there was an opportunity on the forum to buy Gal buckets of Reef Crystal salt. This is made by Instant Ocean, isn't it? People have told me to stay away from Instant Ocean salt. I will be purchasing a new bucket of something in a month or so, so I'd like to read some discussion about everyone's favorite salt. Which is the best and why?

I wonder how accurate that table is. Funny that Red Sea is so low on Ca since is specifically engineered to have higher levels. Lets open it up for debate yet again! What salt mix is best for the reef aquarium and why?

I've used IO for the past 6 months on my reef. I only dose Seachem Reef Complete about twice per week (mixed reef).

I have a bucket of Reef Crystals that I'm going to try, since I got it on sale, but IO is perfectly fine.

IO dissolves with very quickly with little to no residue.... problem with all commercial salt mixes is the "trace elements" they use are technician grade and that is something you have to get over...or not and buy a salt that that uses reagent grade chemicals (and pay through the nose)

So using that chart, the SeaChem Reef Salt would be the best as it is highest in the 3 categories? I am currently using Red Sea Coral Pro on advice from someone that does not seem to be a club member however he had really nice corals. I bought a couple of frags from him. So we got charts which are possibly inaccurate. Any one have any personal opinions about which is better? Stories? Anything?

Capn, sorry to hear about tank problems. In that chart you gave us the link for, it shows that nearly all products were high in nitrates, phosphates, and ammonia. I don't wish to appear dense, but isn't that the stuff we are trying to get rid of by doing water changes in the first place?

it indeed is what we are trying to rid from our tanks. I would not speculate that the graph is inaccurate by ANY means as it was from the findings of a comparsion table based on actual test results that were conducted by the Hawai'i Institute of Marine Biology reported in Marlin Atkinson and Craig Bingman's "The Composition of Some Synthetic Seawater Mixes" article published in the March 1999 issue of Aquarium Frontiers Magazine.

here is a link to the article:

from what I read and have experience IO is a pretty good salt all around but still has it's issues

Ah the old debate that comes up ever so often. There was a testing done by a lab recently of all the major salts. (not any of the links above and I don't have time to search RC for it.) It really depends on if you are running a calcium reactor or not, preference, and budget. I have used several salts. I did not like like IO or Oceanic. I had more nuisance algae problems with them. I really like Tropic Marin Pro, but it is really expensive. I have also used Red Sea Coral Pro with decent results. I am planning on trying the Tunze salt next.

I am sure it will. I did not mean to sound dismissive. It is very interesting to me all the differing opinions. One person will hate a salt while someone else loves it. I guess that is why there are so many options.
