chrisfowler99
Which UPS are you using? How many watts? And what do you have on the UPS? How many total watts? I assume you'd want your return pump on a UPS. Doesn't seem like lights would need to be on a UPS, nor a skimmer, to cover for short outages. Or do you just throw everything on there? Entropy
I don't have UPS on mine, but if I did I would mostly concentrate on in tank circulation. A couple of Koralia's or similiar would probably go quite a while on a small UPS. A return pump on the other hand would probably use up the battery much faster. A heater might also be any issue depending on room temp, but again it would be a battery sucker. Anyway IMO the fish/corals can handle a emergency temp swing, but no flow would deplete the oxygen pretty quick I think.
chrisfowler99
powerheads...I knew I was forgetting something when I was trying to think of what all was plugged in. probably any cooling fans would be good to keep plugged in as well. caferacermike
Never used one. I've lost power in my home for up to 12 hours at a time and my tanks have never shown any signs of stress.
GKarshens
I have a battery powered air pump that senses when the power goes off and runs until the power comes back on. It will keep the oxygen up which is the most important thing. If we ran into a prolonged power outage I might be in trouble. Fortunately that has never happened. Kkiel02
I would use the powerheads instead of the return pump. I guess if the ups has enough power you could use the return pump i guess. I was thinking about getting one but for now I just have an inverter that I use in my jeep and an extension cord for emergencies.
ysanford
It really depends on the load that the ups can handle. I have some at the office that will run entire data rooms for a couple hours. So it would run a reef for at least 10-12 hrs. I would determine the load that you are going to put on it and then match your equipment to operate at the most optimal rate. It would suck to spend the time and money to a have power back up and to have it only work for a few minutes.
