This is our 55g gallon put together today, sorry for the murky water had to do some aquascaping. Me and my wife build the stand last weekend. Just wanted to get some opinions to see if we need to go back in the garage.

Nice job on the stand. May I make a suggestion?.......We've done this ourselves.... try to see if you can fit your magfloat between the glass and rockwork. You want to make sure you've got ample of space between when it comes to cleaning the glass. Just a little tip.

By the way, I like the cave you created on the right.

Thank you for the complements I am gonna try and build a hood soon. Right now I just want to get the tank stable and stocked. I still have some tinkering to do with it so I don't want to have to pull the hood off and on.

Yeah there is one spot on the back of the tank that I can't get the mag float through. The shape of the rock and the size of the tank disagreed. I can't take credit for the cave my wife did that one. Don't tell her but I like it too lol.

primo looking stand bro....please tell me you are leaving it just like that (no visible hardware) and i have plans for a hood than you can just "leave on" it flips up out of the way.

another quick rockscaping tip.... it helps with stability to have our rock in then add sand....esp if you plan to get any diggers....(blennys gobies, pistol shrimp)...it would be a tragedy for a rockscape to collapse and blow out the wall of your tank because of a small excavation from a tank inhabitant....hell I have had Nassarius knock over rockscape.

i kinda like it hoodless....IMHO

now to dog on you......shoulda painted the back glass before you set the thing up. i hate that look of wires/overflow/skimmer visible through the tank....very distracting...distracts from the overall awesomeness of the setup you got there....just saying..kinda late now though

5 Stars for the awesome craftsmanship

Yeah I like the clean no Hardware look. Bring those plans to work tomorrow so that I can check them out. thanks for the compliment.

Having a coral reef is starting to turn you surfer with your primo lingo bro.

I am gonna go and pick up something to cover the back of the glass this week. I left it bare so that I could check everything to make sure that it doesn't leak. I am getting ready to set up my SCWD too so I want to beable to see what it is doing. When all is done I will cover it.

  • 2 months later...

We finally got around to finishing the hood. Perfect timing seeing as our tank is down until Wednesday. Obviously, we still need to paint it, but let us know what you think. The front panel is completely removable.

Front of canopy. We are thinking that we need to put something in the middle of the front panel.

Side of canopy.

This isn't the best picture so don't know if you can really tell. This is the back and you can kind of see the frame.

Looks great, but you might consider vents or fans on the sides to help with heat displacement

Thanks! We have two, one for each side panel, but we just haven't gotten around to mounting them yet. That will be on the agenda for tonight. :)

WOW! What a recovery. Glad to see thing are coming along. The stand looks great! I would like to see the plans for the hood too. I need one for my 29.

Dave-

We can draw it out for you and talk about it at the meeting this weekend. Also, if you need help, we would be willing to lend a hand.

It is very simple - that's one of the main reasons we were able to take on the project. Ha! The front panel is completely removable as well as the top molding piece. We made it that way so that the seems lined up correctly. We were going to attach the molding to the front panel, but we decided to make it two pieces to make it a little easier to remove and put on. We can always attach it later if we decide to go that route. We will take pictures of it once it is complete. We just painted it, so hopefully we can get pictures up this evening and they will show the complete structure.

With pendents, you would just have to figure out a way to mount them to the top panel/cross members. You could make the top panel completely removable if that is what you want...

As for tools, all we used was a miter saw, skill saw and a hammer. For straight cuts we just used a large straight piece of wood to guide the skill saw. You could rent a table saw from Home Depot for $45 a day (I think). We did that when we made the stand. If you need to borrow the tools, just let us know. Like we said before, we wouldn't mind lending a hand.
