Phosphate reactor + no skimmers = less nitrates?

On Monday of this week, I added a HOB phosphate reactor (see blog for more details) and I pulled my 2 Tunze Nano skimmers out of the tank in anticipation of picking up a HOB skimmer from Bill_B.

I decided to check my nitrates this am to see if they were elevated due to not having my skimmers running, but to my amazement, they've DROPPED. They are down to > 10ppm when they were @ 15ppm on Sunday. I can't see how removing a skimmer would help drop your nitrates, but perhaps it has something to do with the phosphates dropping...which doesn't make any sense either.

Anyone got any ideas?

I don't think there is anyway that pulling the skimmers could possibly lower your nitrates. I would guess that the phosphate remover is doing it.

Interesting. I've never read about a Phosphate reactor dropping nitrates, but I guess it could.
