Merman
This thing started growing in my buddy’s tank over the last couple months. Any ideas?
RicordeaFreak
Looks like some sort of sponge, not sure what type. Maybe @Timfish might know what type it is?
Timfish
+1, not sure the species name but it won't tolerate bright light so you shouldn't have a problem with it overgrowing any corals. The "tubes" may follow cycles over time alternately growing and shrinking. There are a few species of sponge that can be an issue because they will grow over corals. Most of the sponges that will grow in our systems are beneficial filter feeders. At least a few of the cryptic species are very desirable as they very quickly remove labile DOC (includes carbon dosing) that may promote pathogenic microbes to corals. Derek Weise
Definitely sponge. I have some in my tank. My dwarf angelfish love to eat it. I also have some growing in my overflow and sump. It's good stuff to have. I love the tube shapes it makes.
