My thought is to setup a group buy for a purchase in December. Everyone puts in what they want, then they can inform (i.e. send email with link to their post) their spouse/partner/etc what they want, so the spouse/partner/etc can buy the requester what was on their post. Its like a wish list, but we'd all benefit from splitting shipping costs and taking care of making Christmas shopping easy for our loved ones! Yes, you have to wait until Christmas to buy anything, but given the economic conditions of the nation, everyone could save their pennies for a couple of months and get what they really want...without having to put it on the plastic passport to poverty.
