+mcallahan
What's everyone's take/experience with phosphate reactors? My phosphates hover between .25 and .6 even after I've cut back my feeding to 1x a day and only feeding enough that the fish clean up in 1 minute. I do 20% water changes 1x a week, but that's getting old and $$$. A $40 phosphate reactor would pay for itself after 3 water changes. I've tried a bag of phosphate remover media, but I don't think I can get enough flow over it to make it worthwhile. What does everyone think...are they worth it? GKarshens
I use one. I don't change the media as often as recommended. I probably do it about once a month. I definitely think it is worth the price. There is one for sale in the forums for $20.
britfish
IMO, a refugium with macro algae is the best solution.
Entropy
I was using one with carbon for a while, but the media is so expensive that I stopped using it. Even carbon gets expensive when your on a budget.
princer7
I use a chaeto refugium as well as phosphate and carbon reactors. I ended up buying the phosphate and carbon media in bulk - $ spent upfront hurts but makes up for it in the long run. If you have the space, it doesn't hurt. What type of food are you feeding? Frozen Mysis shrimp. It comes encapsulated in vitamins which might have some phosphates in it. I've read some accounts of people washing the food before they feed it to get rid of any phosphates, but it seems like it'd just be washing away the vitamins as well.
