Several years ago I bought an old desk, painted it blue and white to match Katie's room and let her and her friends write/draw on it. She still has it, and they still write on it. It's fun to look at their writing and how much it's changed (it's gone from "I love my puppy" to "Brandon Rocks"). And there are drawings from kids that have moved away and stuff like that.
