+Jakedoza
I would love to have a job here.. http://www.kxan.com/dpp/news/local/austin/austin-to-get-a-new-aquarium
jestep
That's awesome. 50,000 visitors per month, and over 100 employees, means it's going to be pretty substantial for a stand-alone aquarium.

+Jakedoza
In that case they could call it Austin Reef Aquarium
Viet'spride70
or they could use ORA, in different definition, OCEAN REEF of AUSTIN....
Timfish
I would certainly like to see an aquarium here in Austin and have wondered why neither of the zoos we have haven't tried to expand with at least sharks as they are certainly a draw. And a big reef system with locally grown corals seems like it would be a good exhibit on conservation. Here's a link to the Idaho Aquarium in Boise owned by the same people: http://idahoaquarium.net And here's a link to some reviews if any body is interested: http://www.tripadvisor.com/Attraction_Review-g35394-d2550173-Reviews-Idaho_Aquarium-Boise_Idaho.html#REVIEWS
esacjack
I personally am tired of seeing aquariums with zero corals. Most use plastic corals, and i think thats pretty lame, given that we can see a shark or dolphin pretty much anywhere. I think in order for this aquarium to stand-out and not become boring (im from corpus, the TSA gets boring real fast) it needs to have a very diverse collection of life. Including corals. jestep
If you are ever in the area, check out the Denver aquarium. They have several of the best reef tanks I've ever seen. Best one is a 12 - 14 ft drop-off tank.

jestep
Probably need to backtrack on this plan: http://www.advancedaquarist.com/blog/idaho-aquarium-indicted-for-buying-illegal-florida-sharks-and-rays Not sure this is who we want running anything here in Austin assuming this is true. +Mlaw
Are we 100% sure these are the same guys that are supposedly building the aquarium here? If so I imagine there is a good chance this project gets put on hold. Legal fees and whatnot.
+brian.srock
Wow good find jestep. After I get my new tank up I can start accepting 50,000 visitings a year at $3 a pop. It would be nice to have an ARC co-op at the aquarium where each member can pay in to rent/have donated a tank and aquascape/stock it to their liking and care for it. jestep
Unfortunately I'm sure it the same people. I verified the owner names before posting. Something I didn't know what that one of the owners, Conk, was the same person that got busted importing illegally a few years ago. http://reefbuilders.com/2011/12/21/idaho-couple-convicted-federal-coral-sting/ Edit: Conk is not an owner, but a director of the aquarium. +Jakedoza
Vince Covino is the owner.. I've already talked to him by email.

+Capt. Obvious
Also has some shady business practices in general: http://www.idahostatesman.com/2012/04/16/2077781/boise-stockbrokers-license-suspended.html
+brian.srock
According to the article unless they don't have their facts straight then it's Idaho Aquarium Director and Owner Ammon Covino Aquarium Director Christopher Conk So Chris Conk was convicted 2 years ago with his ex wife. Regardless of who officialy owns the aquarium they are brothers (Vince Covino and Ammon Covino)and knew what they were doing was wrong since Chris Conk was already convicted and is probably still on parole. Doesn't look like we really wanted them here anyway http://www.zoochat.com/22/idaho-aquarium-review-262820/
