nuxx
Well I might have been living in a dream world for the last 6 months... but today it finally happened. Went by the tank a few minutes ago and noticed the Niger Trigger swimming around with a peppermint shrimp. So it's the first CUC to be eaten so far. I'm not sure if it was the Trigger or the Skeletor Moray (similar to a snowflake), but I also just saw the Trigger snap at another peppermint a few minutes later. I've seen the shrimp all over the eel, and I think the eel would have just ate it whole. So I'm guessing the trigger is the guilty party. Right now my CUC is made up of peppermint shrimp, skunk shrimp, herits and turbos. My question is for people with more aggressive fish, what do you do for a CUC? Also, are their fish replacements for inverts? Cleaner wrasse, etc... The only reason we got the peppermints was to take out one tiny piece of aiptasia we found, but I've heard some fish will eat that as well. Also not looking for fish/CUC that will eat coral
Aaarrrggg
I've heard limpets and really large turbos can do ok in aggressive tanks. Cleaner shrimp can also be ok if the fish are smart enough to recognise the service they perform... but there's always a risk someone will forget! Its better to stay away from buying cleaner wrasses. They have an important role to play and collecting them is apparently causing problems in wild reefs. I'd imagine large hermit crabs could do ok as well. I remember seeing a huge one in an aggressive tank at AquaDome.
nuxx
Never heard that about the cleaner wrasses. All I've heard is that they do very well with some tangs, even a lot better than cleaner shrimp. Our cleaner shrimp is pretty big, and I don't think anybody will mess with him right now. Our Niger is just under 3" and our eel is around 10 but pretty skinny.
subsea
Nothing is sacrted to a trigger fish. If you have seen there behavior in the wild, you will keep him well fed. Just make sure your nutriant export is sufficiant.
nuxx
Guess I need to feed him more? He's a total pig when I put food in...
Aaarrrggg
Here's some more info on the cleaner wrasse: http://piratefx.hubpages.com/hub/cleaner-wrasse One of the big problems is they feed almost exclusively on the stuff they pick off other fish; so they tend to do poorly in aquariums. Never had one myself, just keep coming across threads with people saying we should avoid buying them, so I thought I'd mention it. Its a shame, it would be a cool behaviour to watch. I believe neon gobies can perform the same function, but with their small size I doubt they'd get a chance in an aggressive tank!
nuxx
Nice idea about the neon's... really the Niger will be the most aggressive fish. The eel doesn't care about fish, he's an invert eater. Maybe a Crosshatch Trigger down the line, but they aren't fish eaters. Otherwise just adding tangs, clowns, etc... +Woods
My 2 Cleaner Shrimp clean my Niger Trigger all the time. He goes over to their side of the tank and parks himself just above where they hang out and eventually they come out and start cleaning him. Quite interesting to watch!
