FFKasee
I have a 210 SW Aquarium and i am using a aquaC skimmer that is rated for a aquarium from 100 - 360 gallons, and it is not doing what i would like from a protein skimmer. So now I am looking for a new protein skimmer but the last time i bought one it was 5 years ago, what are the best protein skimmers out now for a large tank with both fish and coral? pbnj
You'll get no consensus on what is considered the "best" skimmer. Everyone thinks the skimmer they have now or have used in the past is the "best" skimmer.
Aqua-Dome
If you clean all the airline ports and the pump and it still doesn't do what you'd like, you need to consider the possibility that your tank just doesn't have a huge amount of DOCs to skim out. wizardx322
I have has 4 skimmers and the one I have now is by far the beat Skimmer I have had Coralife 220 was ok Euroreef hear Skimmer Swc 160 is another great Skimmer But my current Skimmer is the skimz sm201 this thing is a beast and pulls stuff out that takes my other Skimmer 2 weeks it does in days
DerrickH
I find that if I run my skimmer all the time and adjust it to the proper level it doesnt pull much out. After some evap and my sump drops an inch where the skimmer isnt pulling a lot, then I add water after a couple days and bring it back up it pulls out a lot of nasties for a few hours then back to clean foam. I agree, not much DOC in your water most likely. Then again, I have a skimmer rated for a 200g tank running in a 20g sump for a 72g tank... Hows your bio load? big_pun
I run a cs-1 (rated for 150g)by sea side aquatics it's basically a bubble magus nac7 body with a sicce psk-600. they make a cs-2(nac-9 body) psk-1000 pump. I've had mine 4-5 months and it performs flawlessly and easy to pull apart clean and assemble. I also like the Octo Skimmers that run the bubble blaster pumps, for your application I would look at 2000--sss
Richard L
I've got a Super Reef Octopus XP5000. I've run it for 2.5 months and it still has a tendancy to overflow w/out reason.
AquaJohn
All I can say is get one that is rated for more water than you have. If you have a 210 with 80 gal sump I would say get one rated for 500 gal myself.
pbnj
Most manufacturers (probably with the exception of Reef Dynamics and Super Reef Octopus) tend to overstate their skimmers' capacities, however, it is important to get the right sized skimmer for your tank. The biggest skimmer possible is not always the right choice for a tank. You want a skimmer that produces a consistent amount of foam for your bioload, not one that will strip the tank of all available nutrients and then underperform. +Grog
Anyone have experiences with the AquaC Remora on a smaller tank?
Timfish
Are you sure you really need to replace it? Jason Jones posted some research done by Ken Feldman (can't remember which university) but here's the link to Jason's thread: http://www.austinreefclub.com/topic/20307-studies-on-the-effects-of-protein-skimming
Long
I'm running PM bullet 1 on a 100gal over 2 years (wet skim into a 5gal jug) and its never consistent. Some week I get 2 gal and some I get 4 gal.. I had the aqua c a while back but the PM is better in my opinion.

AquaJohn
From the reading I did while reseaching skimmers they are not even close to being able to strip all nutrients from a tank. even if they are way bigger than you need. But I am also sure you can find info that says they can lol
