Brooks
It is possible that they are micro bubbles floating around from your return pump! If that is the case, you could add a sponge to the back of the tank. They will stop some of them. Also, make sure your flow isn't pointed directly at the sand. It sounds so simple, but you never know!

Timfish
Technically carbon filters are chemical filters but every permutation I've used has trapped detritus also. Brooks makes a good point, sometimes it's something simple.

mFrame
In my 90g I always have particulate matter floating around, it drives me nuts. I've got a filter on my return pump and none of my powerheads point at the sand. I have no clue what it is, but I understand your frustration. DragonDiver
Yes!! Its very obnoxious!! It got a little better, but im pretty sure my goby and pistol shrimp are to blame as they have basically been redesigning the layout in the tank. Bannerfish
If it's not sand, but detrius instead, you can put some fine filter pads in addition to the one you already have, but make sure you put it in so that the water will flow through the regular sponge then the fine filter pad so it won't get clogged easily. Turns out my skimmer was causing micro bubbles. Adjusted the level just a bit, and added a sponge to my bubble trap and was all gone. I do know, even the smallest leak in the return will cause this as well. May be sealed enough not to leak, but due to the venturi effect, you will get these. Tighten those clamps! On a side note, I ran sugar sand once....only once.....that stuff will turn a clear tank into a cloudy mess if you have just a few substrate dwellers. Its so light it just floats around. Didnt want that stuff inside my powerheads and such...like a little grinder...

DragonDiver
I'm just using saltwater premixed from RCA because im too much of a noob to mix it myself...

Devin
My Pistol Shrimp is always kicking up my sand while he remodels, maybe that's why you have the floating debris
(Bio)³
I've got a new BC29 running right now, added rocks and rodi... no debris floating. It wasnt until I added salt that I get the debris floating through the water column. I think the coralife salt I'm using has debris in it that floats in the water column. When I get some better salt I'll set up a test station with two 10 gal side by side.
Uncle Fish
+1 to what BiocubeD is saying. I used Oceanic and Instant Ocean before and had a ton of debris floating around. I also thought they were micro bubbles or my pistol shrimp kicking up sand. I recently switched to Kent Marine when I started adding coral and there is a noticeable difference in the amount of things floating around the tank. mFrame
Mine definitely isn't microbubbles. My last several water changes have been with premixed H20 from the Aqua-Dome, not sure what kind it is, but it the particulate matter is persistent enough I'm not going to blame the salt.
