I was curious how many people have found Coral Banded Shrimp eating a dead fish in their tanks or actually seen a Coral Banded Shrimp catch and kill a fish? What prompts my question is comments and posts about them chasing and killing fish. I've certainly found a few over the years munching on a carcass but never considered it possible for a Coral Banded to catch and kill one since they appear to be very weak and incapable of moving their claws when out of water whereas even the smallest fish can flop around pretty well out of water. As far as chasing fish seems to me they're just following their instinct to clean.

As we have talked about, Tim, my cousin's Coral Banded is strongly suspected of flat out eating his clown pair. The shrimp began glowing orange and nearly doubled in size once his clowns went missing. He does have an anemone that is probably about 12" when fully open, although I can't recall the species. Maybe that could have been the culprit? He doesn't really have any spots in his tank (125g) that are completely hidden, so he would be able to see if a dead fish was lying on the sand.

I have seen Coral Banded Shrimp eat dead fish. I have seen them poster, as it to catch fish, during heavy feeding. I always laughed at how optomistic the shrimp was. I too feel that they are not capable of inflicting much damage to a fish. However, it was amusing to see the behavior of my Ocelarius female toward the Coral Banded Shrimp as she herded the juvenils into the safety of the tentacles ..

On a seperate note, the Green Serpant Star always amused me the way it lay in ambush for hours as a spider waiting for prey. I did not think it funny when he look out my tank rased Orchid Dottyback.
