+scubasteve92
Im using an emperor 280 biowheel on my 20g, have had the stock carbon filter and the media insert with pieces of Pura pad in it. My water has been outstanding with my tests and the LFS tests, except the occasional increase in nitrates. But I haven't had any bad issues with my water quality. I was wondering instead of replacing the carbon filter, what some of yalls opinions were about adding some LR rubble to the filter? Or what should I add? I would like to seed it with copepods since i got a scooter "blenny". Should of done some research first... but he has been taking some of the frozen food and has been happy and healthy for over 3 weeks. I just want to get my copepod pop. up. Is this a stupid idea with no hope?? Just don't have the ability to set up a sump on this tank... Any thoughts or opinions? Thanks for the replies. subsea
http://www.marinedepot.com/Aqua_Clear_110_Hang_On_Back_Power_Filter_UL_Listed_HOB_Power_Filters_for_Tanks_Over_30_Gallons-Hagen-HG10595-FIFRHBTO-HG10620-vi.html I have used this HOB for years. It is powerful and has a large chamber that is ideal for the rubble pile of pods. I have used it for this application for years. Leave enough room on top of the rubble pile to add a media bag of carbon or phosphate removal resin. Cheers, Patrick
+o0zarkawater
I have a 55gallon with no sump on it, just HOB Skimmer and a HOB refugium. You can usually find a HOB fuge used either on eBay or on the boards for a decent price if you keep looking. I have the CPR Aquafuge Large, but they make a smaller one. +scubasteve92
Thanks for the replies, I will look into the HOB skimmer and refugium and the AC 110. In the mean time I also have another HOB filter, Its a little one but I could use it only for the rubble.

I ran Aqua-C Remoras on my tanks for years before I decided to try another skimmer, and the amount of stuff the Reef Octos pull compared to the Remoras is crazy. I now have a BH2000 on my 55gal and a BH1000 on my 28gal. I know RCA can order the Octo's, but they also stock a Bubble Magus HOB cone skimmer that looks pretty interesting. +scubasteve92
I was looking at those. They seem pretty good. I was also looking at the aquamaxx HOB protein skimmer and the aqua-fuge 2 HOB refugium small. What do you think? I am also looking at the Octos. +o0zarkawater
I have the aquafuge 2 large and like it, I hate CPR's customer service, but I like the fuge. I was looking at reef octo's HOB fuge, and it looks like its an overflow type, so you would need to make sure you keep your tank topped off for it to work. The CPR has the pump in your tank, so it doesn't need the level to be as consistant. Aquamaxx looks interesting, but I really love my ReefOctos. +scubasteve92
Yeah, well i wasn't going to upgrade all my filtration until i moved back to austin, but i have been looking for the best price online and could have them in 7 to 10 business days. What size tank do you have the large on? And is the BH 1000 enough on your 28? im thinking of just getting the BH 2000 to start on a 30+. (haven't decided what im upgrading to yet). Sorry about all the questions.
+o0zarkawater
The Aquafuge2 Large and the BH2000 are on my 55gal. I bought the fuge because I got a spotted mandarin and wanted to make sure he had enough pod population. (un)Fortunately now he will eat frozen and pellet food, so my tank is overrun by amphi/copepods. The BH2000 is rated up to a 125gal I think, and the BH1000 up to 100 gals. +scubasteve92
ok, so a medium CRP and a BH 1000 skimmer on a 20g to 50g should be good? lol just making sure
subsea
Your thread motvated me to repair the magnetic impellar assemble on the Aquaclear 110 HOB Power Filter and fill it with rubble that is crawing with pods. The filter chamber is almost two gallons. No filter media and pod rubble makes for a large continuous feed of pods. The pump uses 14W of power and moves 500 gph.. I like that kind of operating cost to work delivered. .
+scubasteve92
Im glad! think i have decided on HOB skimmer and ref. also upgrading my lighting!
+o0zarkawater
I like the arrangement of the CPR HOB fuge, because it overflows INTO the tank, instead of being pump driven. This should allow more pods to make it into your DT alive, rather than being forced through a pump.

subsea
I have had numerous pods pass thru the impellar housing of a Mag 7 and continue to live without damage. Many do get damaged and are easy food for the tank inhabitants. I prefer the overflow weir going back to tank. It is a good way to increase circulation and to provide a continuous feed of live undamaged zooplankton.
+scubasteve92
I think im going with the CPR HOB fuge. I am trying to replicate a sump without drilling since ill be moving alot in the next few years. May upgrade the actual take so i will get one that will work for a a little bigger tanks than the 20g.
