+Hydro Posted March 18, 2011 Posted March 18, 2011 I've had this green spot puffer going on 2 years now. It has always lived in my 40 refugium and has had only one long term tank mate and that was a larger fiji puffer. The GSP would always hide unlti it was feeding time when it would pig out...sometimes taking food out of the fiji puffer mouth, and then go back and hide. The fiji puffer was really laid back and never once did I see it go after the GSP. Anyway I replaced the fiji who was getting to big for the 40 gallon with this little boxfish. It and the GSP are now buddies and stay within 4-5" of each other most of the time. At first I thouhght it might be a terrritorial display by the puffer but they have not had a dispute yet and its been a week now together. Also the putfer fish would keep its belly black while it hid all day and now its belly is white all the time as it slowly flutters around the tank with the boxfish,. Quote
VooDoo Posted March 18, 2011 Posted March 18, 2011 when i had a gsp he was depressed, but when i added another gsp he was happy and they never left each others side. i think they do better with a friend Quote
Timfish Posted March 18, 2011 Posted March 18, 2011 It is always something . I haven't had many puffers and never a green spot but I certainly would not have guessed one would be sociable like that. Quote
+Hydro Posted March 18, 2011 Author Posted March 18, 2011 He is a freshwater/brackish puffer, that's probably the reason that you haven't heard of it. It's cool, I'm glad that they are happy together. Eventually I will move them to the DT and see how they act, I want them to grow a little more first. Quote
subsea Posted March 19, 2011 Posted March 19, 2011 I have always found puffers to be "dither fish", drifts in and out of the water column. The cardinals are another good example. Often, after the introduction of a dither fish to an established reef tank, I found shy fish to become more bold and display themselves more. The phychology of fish behavior is not unlike humane behavior. I find it to be one of the more interesting componants of this hobby. Quote
mFrame Posted March 19, 2011 Posted March 19, 2011 Very cool, I love puffer personalities. You're keeping these in the fuge to your marine tanks? Did you have to acclimate them to the higher salinity? Quote

Did you have to acclimate them to the higher salinity? Yes they are in my fuge connected to the tank. The boxfish is a marine animal but the pufferfish can be acclimated to full marine from freshwater. I did it over a couple of weeks, it actually extends their life in captivity from what I've read. VooDoo Posted March 20, 2011 Posted March 20, 2011 They're like cute little wolves. they'll try to eat everything. i hear they may even devour coral. good luck Quote
nemirn Posted March 20, 2011 Posted March 20, 2011 They're like cute little wolves. they'll try to eat everything. i hear they may even devour coral. good luck I have 2 GSP's in a reef tank. They don't mess with the coral, and they're nice to the convict blenny and lawnmower blenny. They're actually much more "peaceful" in full salinity than in fresh/brackish water. Is that your experience as well, Hydro? Quote
+Hydro Posted March 20, 2011 Author Posted March 20, 2011 For sure, this puffer is as laid back as it can be. I have never seen it be aggressive to any other fish. Quote
