I just received my new 250 w mh fixture and the bulb it came with is I believe 10K. It's kinda yellow...... I like the look of the Phoenix 14k bulbs but was wondering if anyone has seen similiar results from another "less expensive" brand.

A 10,000K should be noticeably yellower that a 14,000K. You will also get a lot more light out of a 10,000K than a 14,000K. Advancedaquarist.com has pretty good reviews with a spectral output chart and actual color temp. so you might check to see if they've looked at your bulb. As a reminder, if you change the color temp. of the bulb on your tank expect some of your corals to have changes in color and growth (and not always desirable changes) that may not be noticeable for a month or two or more.

@ Tim, I think 14K is a healthy medium between look and growth. I had one on my previous light and liked the spectrum. I'm just looking for cheaper alternatives to paying $60+ for a bulb.

just a suggestion but you might want to rethink the above...

We all know that this is an expensive hobby...but arguably one of the most important aspects of a reef tank is lighting.

$60 is high for a light bulb however the average MH lifespan is 12 months. That is only $5 per month...

There are many ways to save money related to reefkeeping....but for a successful reef tank I think lighting is one area you might want to "splurge" on.

Just my opinion...
