ReefNewb Posted March 8, 2011 Posted March 8, 2011 Just saw what looks to be a centipede (kinda flat), about 4" long and 1/8th inch wide, come out of the lr in the wifes 8 gal biocube... What is it?! I'd post pics but it won't let me off my phone I guess.. Quote
ReefNewb Posted March 8, 2011 Author Posted March 8, 2011 Looks like a starfish arm, but I saw end to end and no starfish on any end Quote
Gonzobob Posted March 8, 2011 Posted March 8, 2011 Likely a bristle worm, harmless detrivore. Do a google search to confirm. Quote
ReefNewb Posted March 8, 2011 Author Posted March 8, 2011 Confirmed. Thanks guys. Odd lookin fella. Quote
ReefNewb Posted March 9, 2011 Author Posted March 9, 2011 Wifey wants it gone next time I see it, got tweezers sitting next to the tank. :-) Quote
Robb in Austin Posted March 9, 2011 Posted March 9, 2011 I'd advise against removing it. They area good part of the clean up crew. Besides, you have others that you haven't seen. Quote
ReefNewb Posted March 9, 2011 Author Posted March 9, 2011 The wife is disgusted it's in her tank. Lol Quote
JamesL Posted March 9, 2011 Posted March 9, 2011 Oh just wait until more stuff starts coming out of the rockwork Quote
JamesL Posted March 9, 2011 Posted March 9, 2011 BTW, the worm didn't happen to look like this? I have one of these in my tank, and it kills snails and even a clam. It is well over a foot to two feet long Quote
ReefNewb Posted March 9, 2011 Author Posted March 9, 2011 Looks just like that. One of the crabs wasn't fond of him. Quote
JamesL Posted March 9, 2011 Posted March 9, 2011 If it really looks like that, you can try to remove it... but in my experience they are ultra-quick. If the one in my tank gets spooked, it retracts back into the rock really fast. If it is more redish, then I would agree with others that it is a bristleworm, and a good part of the clean up crew. It is well over a foot to two feet long What is this? Is it just an older bristleworm? I have one that looks exactly like that, that is huge, and I just figured wow, one of my bristleworms sure got big! Didn't even think it might kill snails, etc. :/ Quote
JamesL Posted March 10, 2011 Posted March 10, 2011 Eunice or Euclid worm. Nasty things, very predatory. I have seen it spin a mucus netting, catch snails, and eat them. Freaked me out the first time I saw it in my 24g and it wrapped around the tank! Quote

Freaked me out the first time I saw it in my 24g and it wrapped around the tank! OMG - I think I have two of those -- have left them in the tank because I thought they were big bristle worms (6"), but I've seen the nets you're talking about and have been wondering why I can't keep snails alive. Just bought a clam yesterday, I'm going worm hunting later. I heard that putting some mysis in a stocking will attract the worms and they'll get stuck on it - have you heard of that? Thanks! Quote

I have heard of that for bristleworms, but not sure if it will work for the euclid worms. The seuclid worms actually don't have bristles, which I believe is what gets caught in the stocking. Quote
