tom0514 Posted February 24, 2011 Posted February 24, 2011 I bought a tank and they threw in a fluval 305 canister filter. What material do I put in there? Do I even need it on a reef tank? Quote
+KimP Posted February 24, 2011 Posted February 24, 2011 They can be handy for running things like carbon, purigen, etc. Some people put in live rock rubble, and it is another source of flow. They're not necessary though as long as you have rock and sand in the tank for your biological filtration to take place on. Quote
Derekreefer Posted February 24, 2011 Posted February 24, 2011 +1 running things like carbon or LR Quote
Timfish Posted February 24, 2011 Posted February 24, 2011 I haven't seen a canister filter yet that wouldn't leak. If you use it make sure you keep the O-rings clean. A little silicone grease (dive shops carry it) on the o-ring helps. Quote
+Lamont Posted February 24, 2011 Posted February 24, 2011 I use Live rock and the blue part of a Filter Cartridge. It helps clear the water faster during a water changes or a tank disturbance. Quote
Derekreefer Posted February 24, 2011 Posted February 24, 2011 the blue part of a Filter Cartridge Just make sure you change that at least every three days....or watch those Nitrate levels soar Quote
tom0514 Posted February 24, 2011 Author Posted February 24, 2011 You guys think that I should just use liverock and cut off the cannister. Quote
+KimP Posted February 24, 2011 Posted February 24, 2011 You can certainly do that. If it were me, I'd keep it around though in storage or something. It really is very handy if you need to run some carbon or other media. I have the same fluval model and it has run great (no leaks - yet) for the past 3 yrs, but just like Derekreefer said, you have to keep it clean. Quote
+Lamont Posted February 25, 2011 Posted February 25, 2011 the blue part of a Filter Cartridge Just make sure you change that at least every three days....or watch those Nitrate levels soar I do weekly water changes and when i do them i pull that blue stuff out and rinse it clean. I have not had any nitrate problem in a while. Thanks Derek for the letting me know what would happen if I didnt clean as often as I do. Quote
Derekreefer Posted February 25, 2011 Posted February 25, 2011 No worries Lamont. that blue digi I got from you is a full blown colony now. I can hook you up with a good size frag....... Quote
Elizzy Posted February 25, 2011 Posted February 25, 2011 the blue part of a Filter Cartridge Just make sure you change that at least every three days....or watch those Nitrate levels soar +1 I had a Fluval 304 filter running on mine initially because I came from a freshwater background. After learning to trust in the Force, it now sits in my garage. I find HOB filter easier for dealing with the minimal carbon requirements. Quote
Derekreefer Posted February 25, 2011 Posted February 25, 2011 HOB filter easier for dealing with the minimal carbon requirements. That's what I use for Carbon....an Aquaclear with nothing in it but a filter bag that I swap out every week. If you have at least three bags its a snap Quote
