Today I noticed that a frag I bought has sprouted a new head. Right now the frag is mounted to a plug in my sand. Do I need to provide it with more rock to attach to, or will it just keep growing heads and expanding over the sand?

Thanks so much,

They will grow faster if you have them on a rock with room for them to grow, however they do grow their own skeletons and can grow out on the sand on their own.

You will also notice extremely fast growth with regular feedings of frozen mysis.

The heads will grow much faster than the skeleton... so while a new frag will be a little dome of acan heads in only a little while (provided it's placed on the sandbed), it won't grow much faster than any other LPS simply because the skeleton doesn't grow extremely fast. Still, they grow at a reasonable rate.

like others already mentioned, acans will grow their own skeleton but not as fast as the heads....and to add to that, a lot of acans that are not provided with an area to grow on to will actually kind of choke themselves out. The heads will keep multiplying and you will eventually have a tight ball of heads that do not have open spread fluffy heads. I have had many colonies like this and upon fragging them and mounting to new rocks they began to spread much faster and look much healthier.

In some cases I have bought less than noticeable tight colonies that after fragging and giving them room to grow developed some awesome color markings that were not seen in the cluster of tight heads.
