+KimP Posted February 15, 2011 Posted February 15, 2011 Thanks for the heads-up. I use one of these in my tank. Sorry you're having to deal with this mess! Quote
jestep Posted February 15, 2011 Posted February 15, 2011 I had one shock the crap out of me a couple years ago. Marineland was nice enough to replace it for free, after they proceeded to tell me that it was a voltage leak and wasn't dangerous. Measured a full 120 line voltage across a 48" freshwater tank. So nice of them... Quote
wa1tx Posted February 15, 2011 Posted February 15, 2011 Crap... I have one of these. Guess i am going by RCA on way home to get something else. Quote
RotaryGeek Posted February 15, 2011 Posted February 15, 2011 I have a stealth pro that I have had for like 4 or 5 years. Does this one apply to the recall? Quote
Thos Posted February 15, 2011 Author Posted February 15, 2011 Looks like im going to loose my acans candy cains and clams Over 2,000 in coral now. Not counting new sump and new skimmer and floor. Quote
wa1tx Posted February 16, 2011 Posted February 16, 2011 Sorry to hear that Thos. Is the company working with you to replace what was damaged and lost? Quote
+lewk Posted February 19, 2011 Posted February 19, 2011 Just wondering if anybody has heard about this or actually replaced their Marineland heater. When you go to look at heaters on Marineland's website, they no longer show up. Kind of glad I swapped mine out recently. Quote
+lewk Posted February 19, 2011 Posted February 19, 2011 I think it's only for 100 watt and up models, but I'm not positive. Quote
+KimP Posted February 19, 2011 Posted February 19, 2011 I pulled mine out right away. Gary, at the dome, checked up on it for me just to be sure it included the newer models so I didn't buy a new one for nothing (thank you Gary!), and they are recalled. Haven't figured out what to replace it with yet. The nicer ones I've looked at appear to be the same as the stealth ones, just a different brand. I need to keep looking though. Quote
+lewk Posted February 19, 2011 Posted February 19, 2011 Yeah, I just called Dr's Foster and Smith and they're shipping me a replacement (Fluval M) and a label to ship mine back. Quote
diabeetus Posted February 19, 2011 Posted February 19, 2011 there was a thread on this just a couple days ago. yeah take em out! bad things happen with the stealth pro's Quote
Sherita Posted February 20, 2011 Posted February 20, 2011 Where can we find the exact info on the recalled heaters? I have three of them, all bigger than 100w Quote
Robb in Austin Posted February 20, 2011 Posted February 20, 2011 run a google search, its all over nvmd: here is the link i was looking for: http://reefbuilders.com/2011/02/14/marineland-stealth-pro-heaters-recall/ Quote
+Mel in Elgin Posted February 20, 2011 Posted February 20, 2011 When you get back up and running I can hook you up with some candy canes... Looks like im going to loose my acans candy cains and clams Over 2,000 in coral now. Not counting new sump and new skimmer and floor. Quote
offroadodge Posted February 20, 2011 Posted February 20, 2011 so i have an old glass marineland and the new thermoplastic black heater. I have never used them by themselves, I mean they are plugged into my reefkeeper and it turns them off and on so there is NO issue of overheating. I turned the temp dial all the way up on heater and set the reefkeeper to turn them off and on. As of today i havent had any issues. Dont know if that is the issue but it has worked for me. Quote
offroadodge Posted February 20, 2011 Posted February 20, 2011 i dont realy understand the issue, is it there control feature that turns them off/on? Are they just stayn on and overheating? Quote
Robb in Austin Posted February 21, 2011 Posted February 21, 2011 Jeremy, I believe the recall only applies to the newer stealth pro models. I have an old stealth model that has been running for 3-4 years without problem. I'm not sure at what point the pro models came out, or even if all of them are bad or only just a certain date range of manufacture. I suppose the notice above could explain some of that but I haven't looked closely to decipher it. Edit: I merged the two topics dealing with this problem, so if it seems a bit convoluted, that's why! Quote
offroadodge Posted February 22, 2011 Posted February 22, 2011 i checkd the new pro i hv and its under recall, pulled it pronto...the other is the hydor theo 200w which isnt recalled Quote
Thos Posted February 23, 2011 Author Posted February 23, 2011 Well I sent in my claim for the corals I lost new sump,skimmer,190lbs of fiji rock, 4bags of black live sand. Oh and 200 gallons of water. Hopefully I will get everything. Quote
+Mel in Elgin Posted February 25, 2011 Posted February 25, 2011 I sure hope they cover everything... Thanks for letting us know as soon as this happened. You may have saved one of us from the same situation. Thankfully I replaced my heater without incident. Please keep us posted... caferacermike Posted February 25, 2011 Posted February 25, 2011 That's sad for the tank loss. On another note, you've all seen me say again and again that heaters are not worth the risk. They fail all to often in catastrophic ways. Quote
+Mel in Elgin Posted February 25, 2011 Posted February 25, 2011 Just curious...is there an alternative to a heater? That's sad for the tank loss. On another note, you've all seen me say again and again that heaters are not worth the risk. They fail all to often in catastrophic ways. Quote

Yep.. just plain not using one I took mine out a few months ago from my 75g and everything has been quite happy. caferacermike has been running heaterless for a very long time. Quote
