+Hydro
I didn't think of it until today. If you use the reef calculator on bulkreefsupply.com to figure out actual gallons (tank water volume minus rock, sand, etc). I've check my Mg and Ca, both are a little low. I went to http://www.bulkreefsupply.com/store/reef-calculator and put in my estimated gallons, current Mg and Ca levels, and my desired levels. I doesd the tank accordingly and will remeasure at the end of the day to see if it raised the levels the amount calculated. If not I can work backwards to figure it out and get pretty close. The next time I need to dose I will run through this routine again to verify if I got it right. Seems simple enough, maybe everyone has already done this and I'm just now catching up, lol. +Hydro
So with a 440 gallon tank, 75 gallon sump and a 40 gallon refugium I had a 555 gallon potential. I could only use the Ca calculator to determine my gallons, the Mg calculator is completely wrong and shouldn't be used to dose your tank. I added 200 ml of Ca supplement and it raised my Ca in my tank by 40 ppm, this equated to 360 gallons of actual water in my tank which is much less than I was guessing it would be. I'll double check the next time I dose just to be sure. The Mg calculator suggested that I put 1800 ml of supplement to raise my levels 150 ppm....welll I only added 400 ml just to be safe and it raised my levels 140 ppm. The Mg calcualtor is WAAAAY off and shouldn't be used. I'll probably send BRS an email about it, you can overdose your tank with its calculations.
