I went about 4 years ago. It was SO much fun. It is mainly shopping, and people there are pretty crazy drivers, so don't take a cab... we tried to walk everywhere except longer trips to the beaches... The beaches are beautiful. We went to Sapphire Beach, and Magens Bay.

Brooks...did you snorkel? Do they have McDonalds there??????? or a Starbucks????

I did didn't really get the chance to do much snorkeling. I just grabbed my mask and fins and swam around the beach. I saw some cool fish, but I didn't get to see any reef.

When we were there it was advised to not go into deeper water. Well, the locals did. My dad was in a jewelry shop, and to entertain us, the people that worked there were talking to my brother and I and my mom was standing with us, we talked about how we were planning to snorkel later in the day, and check out the reefs. They didn't say why, but they were pretty straight forward in telling us not to go deep.

As far as McDonalds and Starbucks, I'm sure I saw a Starbucks but not a McDonalds. We really only ate local food.

okay, when are you going and how long? I WANT TO COME! I so need a decent vacation...I'm jealous and whiney and blah now...not fair! The only vacation we've taken in the past ten years was going to Port A twice, traveling back home (doesn't count), and I got to tag along to Santa Monica for hubby's work...which meant I basically stayed in a darn hotel room most of the trip. You better have fun for me!

I've been to St. Thomas, St. John and St. Croix and they are truly beautiful relaxing places. I stayed at an all inclusive place (Wyndham I think) on St. Thomas and wouldn't recommend it. The beach was ok but the food after a day was terrible and we ended up eating out anyway. St. Thomas is by far the biggest tourist island as they have a ton of people coming off cruise ships daily and lots of shopping.

St. John is the single most beautiful place I have ever been in my life. Something like 75% of the island is national park and the beaches have incredible snorkeling all over the entire island. If you go to St. Thomas you can take a ferry to St. John for the day and you will not regret it.

St. Croix is kind of in between the two islands and is really cool. We stayed at the Bucanneer Hotel and the snorkeling was really great. I also did a "resort dive" where the dive shop came to the hotel pool, taught me how to dive in about 2 hours, then took me out into 35 feet of water with a master dive instructor. Snorkeling is great but diving is a whole different world.

And St. Thomas does have fast food, and K-Mart. There is a dairy farm near Maegen's Bay that makes the best milkshake I have ever had that you absolutely need to try. The ferry to St. John goes out of Red Hook FYI.

Robin and I have been to all three (four) Islands listed above. We have never snorkeled before and absolutely fell in love with it. We took the ferry from Red Hook to St. Johns. There is a National Park devoted to the reef out there. It was incredible to swim among a school of Picasso Trigger Fish! Absolutely stunning.
