  3. Hi all, well it’s been quite a while and a few different tanks, but I finally decided to build an SPS dominant tank that the sticks should really like. 😊. Also, I’ve seen quite a few cube tanks and really like the layout so I decided on a fairly large cube. I got Planet Aquariums to build a custom 135gal that’s 36” x 36” x 24”tall, so it’s a 3’ cube, 24” tall, rimless, 3/4” thick glass, polished edges, blacked out back, 1” thick pvc bottom, and a 16” Modular Marine overflow. The stand is a custom welded 2” steel that’s powder coated black. (Below) this build has a ton of fairly cool hardware in so I’ll cover all that in detail.
  4. Hi all, after living in a small home for the past 6 years and having limited space for a larger tank, the wife and I finally moved up into a larger home with plenty of wall space for a larger tank. We plan on living in this home for a while, and this is the closest I'll get to a dream tank for a long time. I decided to order a custom build tank through River City Aquatics that is 7 feet long, 30" wide, and 24" tall. Roughly 260 gallons of water in the display tank. We are also expecting a daughter to arrive in February 2020, so planning the tank to be kid safe was a key consideration. Since I don't want the kid to have access to the tank sump, the rats nest of wires and cables, and all the chemicals and reagents I keep under the tank, an in-wall tank was the best solution. The house we bought did not offer many wall options for an aquarium except for the living room wall that was shared with the garage. My wife has never been able to park her car in the garage, so I had to be sure to leave at least half of the garage available to her to park her car while also having a fish tank in the garage. Since it's Texas and the garage will get insanely warm in the summer, I decided to build a dedicated fish room in the garage to house the tank and accessories. Since it's a one door, 2-car garage, I had to build a false ceiling for the garage door to open over. It seemed like an easier and cheaper option than replacing the garage door with a 2 door garage. I ran electric on two dedicated 20 volt breakers through the room. I also ran 1/4" tap water lines and internet cables through the walls to reduce the clutter. I decided if I ever wanted in-ceiling speakers to listen to music in the fish room while I performed maintenance, now is the time to do it, so I installed 2 Bluetooth speakers in the false ceiling as well. Trying to think long term here. I plumbed central air into the room for temperature control. Not sure if this will be enough in the summer heat, but I'm going to try this first before installing any kind of AC unit in the room. The build was going well and on schedule until the day I opened the wall for the tank and found that a load bearing column for the loft of the house ran right through the open space I wanted. This was a devastating blow to me. I thought the project would be dead in the water with such an integral part of the house in the way. But I persisted on, spoke with some engineer friends, did my research, and settled on installing a beefy header that would more than carry the load of a 7 foot opening. I built a temporary wall to support the weight while I removed the studs and the column. With the help of a friend I was able to wedge the header in place and secure it. I had made and installed a mesquite live edge bar top in the kitchen of our previous home and liked it enough to do something similar in the new house. The aquarium provided the perfect location for one, so I bought a solid piece of cherry, filled the cracks with gold leaf, and covered it in a high gloss epoxy resin. A little bit of drywall work to patch up where I installed the header, I installed the bar top, and I'm back on track to getting this tank build complete. I built a light rack out of extruded aluminum and hung it over the tank with a modified kayak lift so I can raise and lower the lights when I need to. I worked my butt off to get this room built starting in mid November, and I met my deadline of having the tank wet by Christmas. Granted I'm only performing a leak test at this point, but it sure feels good to have gotten this far considering the obstacles I've faced up to this point. Plumbing the tank will be next!

  7. Had a 90g reef tank in the late nineties while in high school. I’m getting back in the hobby. I just bought a new house and with that have an office with room for a tank. I ended up going with a Waterbox 180.5. It’s basically a 140g display tank. It arrived today. I plan on going after a pretty high end setup and will roughly follow the WWC/BRS hybrid method and go after a nice SPS dominant tank. I’ve bought about 80% of the rest of the gear for the tank setup to this point and looking forward to the build. Excited to connect with the AUSTIN reefing community. My biggest concern actually is my mixing station setup and I’d like to go ahead and figure out AWC and need a reference for someone knowledgeable running tubing through ceilings and walls. Adding a couple pics of my current stage.

  9. 20 gallon Innovative Marine Kessil a160 no skimmer single Tunze 008 return pump dosing with Triton four part dose with Acro Power every other day target feed with Reef Roids about twice a week. I haven't had a coral tank in a few years so this is my system for getting my sea legs back. I started it back in February and I will make some posts catching the thread up to where the system is now. The tank is corals only. I am growing them out to donate or sell and keep a few as pets for a project later. I got my first ARC corals at the frag sale back in March. I've been picking up a few from the $5 tank at Aqua Dome and the occasional frag from Aquatek and Austin Aqua Farms. Right now my bird of paradise Seriatopora and my Acan are my coral babies. The tank has no skimmer. There is a filter floss, carbon or poly filter occastionally. Otherwise filtration is down through small weekly water changes and by the ball of Chaetomorpha in the corner. More soon, very glad to be back on ARC! The frag sale in March was excellent, so glad to see the local hobby doing well. IMG_6256.MOV

  11. Hey all it’s been awhile since I did anything on a build thread and I would Really like to document the reboot of my 150. My wife and I moved from Round Rock to Georgetown back in May and we have been pretty busy getting settled and getting the new house set up, so there hasn’t been much time for the tank which was sitting in the garage til a few weeks ago. My brother in law came up and we finally got it moved into it’s new home after getting it cleaned up. The few fish and corals I have left have been chilling in my QT and I am sure ready for the big tank to get set up. last week I got the rock soaking in some bleach to get all the organics from the old tank off. Decided to try this after watching the BRS investigates the best way to cure rock. We’ll see how it works out so far the rock looks really white.... This weekend my dad came up with his power miter and helped me get the plumbing cut. We had started with a hand miter and what a pain that was. Took less than half the time to get it all cut with the power miter. I like the way the blue and gray looks so hopefully there won’t be any leakswe did come up a little short on the return pump end and I had to order a new union and male adapter for the pump. Thankfully I have plenty of PVC left so that won’t be an issue. Hopefully I can get that taken care of later this week. This is the first time I have ever heard plumbed a tank and I’m hoping it will hold up better than the felxible stuff I have used in the past. Today the new skimmer came and it looks really nice. It’s an SVS-24 from Jeff at life reef. I have read really good things about his skimmers so I wanted to give one a try. Hopefully it will live up to the hype gonna use a laguna maxflo 1350 to feed it. All the other equipment at this point will be from the old tank. 2x250 radiums on magnetic ballasts. BML super actinic strip for dusk dawn. Return pump is a sicce syncra 5. 2 MP40’s for in tank flow and a Neptune Apex to control it all. My goal is for this to be an SPS dominant tank with a bunch of wrasse. In the past I have used two part dosing and have had mediocre results with my SPS so I am looking at something that will keep the tank super stable. For dosing i’m Still up in the air. I have been doing some research on the Triton method and have seen some pretty good results, but there are just as many so-so results it seems. Plus I would need a 4 dosing pump set up, but I’m not totally against trying it. If anyone has any experience please let me know. The other option would be to bite the bullet and get a CARx, and honestly this is the way I may be leaning right now. I have never run one before and they seem kinda complicated. If I was to do it I think I would do a geo 618 with the aquarium plants carbon doser or a dual stage. I am still researching these things so if you CARx gurus have any advice I am all ears other than that I have ordered some tropic Eden reef flakes for my new sand bed and some Red Sea blue bucket to start things off. Hopefully I’ll get it leak tested later this weak and get it cycling in the next few. Til then gonna continue reading about triton and CARx to try and make that decision. Like I said any advice from the CARx gurus or folks that have used triton will be much appreciated.
  12. I realize "Beginner" and "240 Gallon" is kind of an oxymoron, but go big or go home... I recently acquired a 240 Gallon tank that is set up to be a reef tank, although the farthest it every got with the previous owner was about 1 month with water and some rock in it. It has been sitting in a garage for about 7 years. I purchased the whole set up and I want to get started assembling the tank and getting it going. I have no idea what I am doing, but I have been doing a lot of research and I think I have a few ideas... 1. I want an Apex controller 2. I want (2) Kessil AP700 lights. The light box that came with this tank is old technology and I don't want to deal with the big metal halides. I also like the look of a more open top tank. The tank was custom built, the stand was custom and the sump was custom. It has a 4', 60 gallon sump which seems about right from the research I have done. The skimmer was the latest and greatest when it was new, 7 years ago, but it hasn't been run but maybe 2 months its whole life. Although it has a crack in it, not sure if i can fix that with some aquarium silicone or epoxy or what not. I'm looking for some direction and some help if anyone can help guide me in the right direction. I want it to be high quality, and I like redundancy too. Also, I like to have as much automation as possible. At this point, I'm not even sure what questions I need to ask...So I'm hoping someone can spur some conversation and help me figure out what the right questions are to ask. I look forward to joining this community and learning from anyone that is willing to take the time!! **Note** These pictures are of the tank when it was originally set up approx. 7 years ago, it is in pieces right now, in my dining room.**
  13. The thumbs up has been given and Ty has agreed to host the club so everyone can check out his tank and fish room. Please be aware that he does have a baby under 1 year old so if you are sick, just recovered, or your kids are sick, please help him out and skip the meeting. With that said, he will be catering the usual Vietnamese food as snacks for all that attend and frags will be available for purchase. You can bring frags to trade or buy but make sure you have your own container to hold them. PM Ty for address This event will be held from 2:00pm to 4:00pm.
  14. Hi all, I have made an Excel spreadsheet for me to use to help keep me on track and honest about my water testing. I have formatted it with average parameters for a mixed reef tank since that is the tank I am currently striving for. The parameters are completely customizable to what you want in your tank with about 15-20 minutes of work depending on your knowledge of Excel. With the formatting I currently have set up it will let you know when your parameters are inline with what you desire for your tank. I set in a dosing calculator for additives and medications (if you use them) to help you quickly figure out how many mL of the solutions you use and it is able to figure out a daily dosage based on the recommended dosing procedures on the bottle. I have included it on the post if anyone is interested in the file. If you have a hard time changing the parameters to the ones you desire let me know and I will gladly set them up for you. If any of you do end up using the file, I would love to hear any feedback about it on how it works for you/how to improve it for easier use. Tank Levels Shareable.xlsx

  20. Question, if I buy a piece of SPS from a store or fellow reefer I usually try to find out what lighting it was placed under. But I think I should be asking what are the water parameters they were grown in. I would think if you buy a piece that is grown in Alk of 7.5 and drop it in a tank with a Alk of 9.5 this would shock the crap out of them. We all have had issues were the KH has dropped below par by accident and have seen the results. So what is the best way to acclimate them to the tank? Or am I overthinking this.

  22. Hola Austin Reefers! I just heard from Holly at Cultivated Reef and she said with another group order we could get free shipping (as long as I can get multiple reefers to order). So would anyone be interested in going in on a group order? One great thing about Cultivated Reef is if you ask they will send you wysiwyg photos of the frags you're interested in to choose from. I want to get a feel from the group before completing the order, but I was thinking within 2-3 weeks. They have a really great selection and I did place an order with them from the previous group order(everything came in great shape), and I was thinking about getting some corals I haven't been able to find around town. http://cultivatedreef.com/ For making the payment what we did last time was order threw cultivated reef and for shipping select "Pick Up" and in notes type in "Group Order for ARC" It was pretty simple and they wrote my name on each bag to make picking up my corals a breeze.
